Back in the Hometown This is the time of year that I begin checking out the Myrtle Beach webcam and starting up a daydreaming ache for the ocean. In the old days seemingly half of Elkin would congregate at Myrtle during Chatham Mill vacation week, the third week of July. With all mill operations shut down for the week, many of us took advantage and headed for the cool coast. During Chatham vacation week you could walk down Myrtle’s oceanfront Ocean Boulevard from the old Pavilion to the south-end amusement park now called Family Kingdom and consistently see hometown folks you knew.
