Chromatography and Forensics

Chromatography and Forensics
Forensic techniques are used to investigate and help solve many different crimes, including theft, drug trafficking and use, murder, and terrorism. Forensic scientists, therefore, need to use the most advanced techniques available to them to help examine evidence and secure convictions for criminals involved in crimes. This article will provide an overview of how chromatography is used in forensic science.

Chromatography – An Overview
Chromatography is a laboratory technique for separating compounds within a mixture, first devised in Russia in 1900 by Mikhail Tsvet. There are two phases of chromatography – the mobile and stationary phase. The mobile phase is where the mixture is dissolved in a fluid (either a gas, solvent, or water) which is then carried through a system (for example, a column or a capillary tube) on which is affixed a material. This is the stationary phase. ....

Applications of Chromatography in COVID-19

Applications of Chromatography in COVID-19
The Sars-CoV-2 virus has caused a pandemic which has led to nearly 100 million cases globally by the end of 2020. The development of effective vaccines and treatments by companies and governments worldwide has gathered pace at an unprecedented speed, and robust analytical methods have been employed by researchers worldwide. This article will discuss the role chromatography techniques have played in the development of our response to the global pandemic.

First devised by Mikhail Tsivet in 1900, chromatography is used to separate compounds within a mixture. It involves two phases, a mobile and a stationary phase. In the mobile phase, the mixture of interest is dissolved in a fluid, which can be either a gas, solvent, or water. This is then carried through a system where a material, or the stationary phase, is affixed. ....

Bruker and Evosep announce major progress in unbiased, quantitative true single-cell proteomics

Bruker and Evosep announce major progress in unbiased, quantitative true single-cell proteomics
Bruker Corporation and Evosep today announced major progress in high-sensitivity, quantitative true single-cell proteomics, using a modified
timsTOF Pro mass spectrometer connected to an
Evosep One low-flow chromatography system.
Evosep One is a chromatography system that delivers fast, sensitive and robust proteomic analysis of clinical samples, while supporting connections to a wide range of mass spectrometers.
These advances have been demonstrated by the Mann-group in a paper by
A. Brunner et al., which is now available on Bioarchive here. Key results include the first untargeted and unbiased analysis of true single cells achieving an identification depth of up to 1,500 protein groups from single FACS-sorted and individually digested HeLa cells. This remarkable sensitivity was achieved by the combined ....

Sartorius to acquire Novaseps chromatography process equipment division

Posted January 6th, 2021 for Sartorius
Göttingen, January 6, 2021
Proposed transaction builds on both companies’ strategic R&D partnership
Strengthens Sartorius position in downstream bioprocessing
The life science company Sartorius today announced it has entered into an agreement through its subgroup Sartorius Stedim Biotech to acquire the chromatography process equipment division of Novasep. The parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price until the necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained. Novasep’s division expects to generate sales revenue of approximately 37 million euros in 2020 at double-digit profit margins and employs approximately 100 people, the majority of whom work at its Pompey site in northern France and some in the USA, China and India. The proposed transaction is subject to antitrust approvals and the information and consultation of Novasep’s works council and is expected to close during the first half of ....

Highly Stable Detector Improves GPC/SEC Results

Jan 06 2021 Read 1616 Times
The Differential Refractive Index (DRI) detector from Testa Analytical Solution eK offers unmatched accuracy and reliability for determination of absolute concentration and total mass balance in Gel Permeation Chromatography/Size Exclusion Chromatography (GPC/SEC) applications.
The baseline signal stability of any liquid chromatography detector is very important, as it is a limiting factor in peak determination. Detector stability gains even more importance where analysis time is long, such as is commonly encountered in high resolution GPC/SEC applications.
Use of multiple columns is common in GPC/SEC as a technique to increase resolution and also to increase the available dynamic range in terms of molecular weight. As such, high resolution GPC/SEC measurements can often take 30 to 60 minutes for a single separation. As a result, most HPLC detectors adapted for use in GPC/SEC will show a significant baseline drift between ....
