Hampshire sentencing set next week Scott Cousins, scousins@thetelegraph.com FacebookTwitterEmail Hampshire EDWARDSVILLE Sentencing for an Alton woman who has pleaded guilty in the death of her 14-year-old daughter from diabetes is set for next week. Amber Hampshire pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter in early October. In exchange for her plea, a count of endangering the life and health of a child was dropped. She has been free on bail since the plea was accepted. Sentencing has been delayed several times and is now set for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 11 in the Madison County Criminal Justice Center before Circuit Judge Kyle Napp.

The courts have been closed to all but essential hearings, with much of the court’s business being conducted remotely for the past year. Last Monday the first in-person hearings were held, including Traffic Court, one of the biggest dockets, and the first grand jury in about a year. “We moved a lot of files,” Mudge said. “We’re off to a good start so far. We’re slowly, cautiously resuming services here.”
Grand jury back in business, hands down indictments Scott Cousins, scousins@thetelegraph.com FacebookTwitterEmail EDWARDSVILLE After a year’s absence, a new Madison County Grand Jury was empaneled this week and quickly went to work, handing down several indictments Thursday. The new grand jury was part of the expansion of in-person hearings and other court activities, which have been severely limited by the coronavirus pandemic. The last grand jury in Madison County started work in January 2020, according to Circuit Judge Kyle Napp. “We picked and empaneled this grand jury on Wednesday and Thursday of this week,” she said. “Their session runs from March 4 through June 24.”
