City Hall unhappy with 106th Street property's condition, police attendance

Following the presentation, council then met in a half-hour in-camera session behind closed doors to discuss the issue further.
In the end, there was no public decision announced and it is not immediately clear in the aftermath of the meeting what the next steps are for the city in addressing the dilapidated property.
The city has been attempting for months to take action against the property, starting with the issuing of a demolition order on Aug. 27, 2020.
The order came in the wake of a building inspection report from Aug. 25, 2020, that cited numerous deficiencies, including broken windows, cracked and missing siding, broken doors, boarded up windows and doors, concerns that the garage wall could collapse, and problems with the interior including broken or missing light fixtures.

Some city council members want local contractors involved in trunk main bid

In particular, he wanted to know how council might “waive the requirement to have these companies previously work on a large-scale project” — which seems to have tripped up the ability of local firms to make a bid.
Ironstand said he was not asking to give the project to local companies — just to give them the opportunity to bid. The local companies are “our tax base,” he said, adding they would also be in a better position to fix problems later. “If something goes wrong, the local companies will be there within hours,” said Ironstand.
But City Manager Randy Patrick responded they can’t give a local preference to this project.

City council asked for help in liberty swing installation

The liberty swing, which is specially designed for use by those in wheelchairs, was purchased in 2020 at a cost of around $30,000. The plan is to put up the swing at the natural space playground, which was itself funded as a partnership between the city and BECIP.
The liberty swing has since arrived, and has been stored at the Parks office. The next step is to put the various pieces together and install it, something Sabraw indicated is no small task.
She informed council that after reviewing the “big binder” that detailed extensively how to put the swing together, and after discussions with the city’s Gord Whitton, they are looking at contracting someone to install the swing.

City looking ahead at potential reopening

That was presented in a report from their director Cheryl DeNeire at Planning Committee on Monday.
This timeline is what the city’s budget for the year is based on, she said. The dates were described by DeNeire as “best guesses,” and might shift depending on whether things are delayed further. “If things are even faster, that’s great,” said DeNeire.
The timeline presented is based on vaccinations being completed by the end of September 2021, and runs as follows:
Present: Recreation facilities run according to the current restrictions. That includes a maximum 100 users at the aquatic centre, 180 at the field house, and 30 for galleries.

Bad news for massive N.B. sewer trunk project - $1.5 million over

That is $1.5 million over the original submitted cost of the project of $13.6 million.
Of that overage, Bayer said half of it is made up of construction PST, which was a provincial government dictate that came in after the city applied for the project in 2017.
Checking with the feds, Bayer said there was nothing that could have been done by city staff about it. Essentially, he said, the timing of the submission is the driver of that cost.
Bayer said it was a cost the city would not get back. “You used to get refunded the cost of PST, and no longer is that the case,” said Bayer.

CSO program under review

The idea behind the document is to make sure the level of service of the CSOs meets the expectations of the community at large. According to the memo from Director of Protective Services Lindsay Holm, the goal of this document is “to summarize the types of services being provided by the CSOs, list any constraints, and determine the financial resources required to meet these service levels.”
“Now we’ve got something that sets the bar for our citizens and now we can measure against that, see if we’re meeting that,” Holm said at the meeting.
The document was put together through interviews with staff, several meetings and ride-alongs. The draft statement is described as a “living document” subject to change.
