City of Graham names Ingram as new economic development director

Grant Ingram last week accepted the position as the new Economic Development Director for the City of Graham, moving from his manager position of the Graham Convention and Visitors Bureau. While he said he has a lot to learn about the position, he looks forward to making impactful decisions for the town he calls home.
Ingram was raised in Tyler and graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in hospitality management. He worked at resorts in Wyoming and Graford before taking a position as the Graham CVB manager in May 2019, a position he said is hard to leave.
“It was not an easy decision by any means,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed my position as the manager of the CVB and being able to be involved in bringing tourism to Graham and to Young County, but I believe the Lord is leading me to more responsibility and the chance to have a bigger impact on Graham as a whole in the community.”

Mebane approves incentives for expansion of Lotus Bakeries after Alamance County says no

“We’re going to stay here – it’s really great here, and eventually we will expand here,” said Bart Vanterwyngen, Lotus plant manager, at a hearing this week. “What we are looking at now is a $60 million opportunity in the next two and a half years instead of spreading it out over the next 10 to 15 years after investing in Belgium first.”

Lotus Bakeries has come back a third time in five years to Alamance County and the City of Mebane for incentives and offered to almost double its investment and more than double its workforce.

GRAHAM, N.C. —
Note: Above video is from a story when the Court first blocked the protest rules in July 2020.
The NAACP has gone back and forth with Alamance County for months. They first filed the lawsuit in July 2020. The City of Graham passed an ordinance requiring permits for protests on Courthouse grounds. Crowds of hundreds people had been gathering near the Courthouse following the death of George Floyd. On Tuesday, the two sides settled the dispute effectively putting the case to rest.

PW exclusive: NC minister who counseled George Floyd's family discusses the Chauvin verdict

Rev. Gregory Drumwright, who was in the courtroom Tuesday, has both hope and continuing concern about the relationship between law enforcement and Black Americans
The minutes leading to Judge Peter Cahill’s reading of the jury verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin were filled with anxiety, angst and uncertainty, says the Rev. Gregory Drumwright, a Greensboro minister who has provided pastoral care to George Floyd’s family the past several months.
Drumwright, who leads Justice 4 the Next Generation, a coalition of millennial leaders who organize against racial inequality, was in the courtroom Tuesday when Cahill announced the jury had found Chauvin guilty on all three charges in Floyd’s death.

Legal settlement ensures protests are allowed around the Alamance County Confederate statue

The Alamance County Sheriff’s office cannot prohibit protests at the courthouse Confederate monument, and demonstrators cannot be arrested for swearing at deputies, under a court settlement finalized Tuesday.
The NAACP and demonstrators sued the City of Graham, Alamance County commissioners, and Alamance Sheriff Terry Johnson in federal court last year over limits on protests outside the courthouse and around the Confederate monument. The settlement settles the lawsuit and says demonstrators are allowed in areas that the Sheriff’s Office made off limits last summer.
Graham repealed its ordinance, which strictly limited protests, soon after the lawsuit was filed.
“We are happy to have negotiated this settlement agreement for racial justice demonstrators who were denied their First Amendment rights by the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, but if law enforcement officials had followed the U.S. Constitution this settlement would not have been needed in the first place, Elizabeth Haddix, managing attorney for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said in a statement.

GRAHAM, N.C. — Questions have been swirling about the new tall iron fence that's now surrounding a confederate monument in downtown Graham.
How much did it cost – who wanted it there – and why now?
WFMY News 2's Jess Winters got her hands on several documents that indicate Alamance County leaders have been planning to put the fence around the controversial confederate monument since at least August 2020 for preservation and protection.
As of Monday, 8-foot-tall iron fencing has replaced what was once some small chains and granite surrounding the confederate soldier.

Former Mebane and Alamance County manager worked 30 years on growth

Over his more than 30-year career, Cheek was part of a rotating cast of local leaders weaning the local economy off textiles by recruiting companies in other industries and making room for them. He also managed Mebane while it nearly doubled in population and was part of another trend in governance focusing on quality of life issues, which turns out to be especially appealing to people not tied to a workplace.
“I think the most important quality he brought was his vision,” said Mebane City Council Member Patty Phillips. “The quality of life is probably the most important aspect of local government these days because people can live anywhere they want.”
