Owning a pet is associated with slower decline in verbal memory and fluency for older adults who live alone, new longitudinal data show.
Researchers found that pet ownership was associated with slower rates of decline in verbal memory and fluency among those living alone.
“Pet ownership may completely offset the effect of living alone on cognitive decline,” said study coauthor Dr. Ciyong Lu.
Getting a pet can help slow the progress of dementia for those who are 50 and over and live on their own.
