　　“在西方国家，苹果树高度普遍在2.8米以下，而我国传统栽培的苹果树一般在3.8米以上。”韩振海介绍，果树长得高大，单棵产量虽大，但由于一亩地只能种20～40棵树，亩产往往只有2000多斤；而国外普遍推行的苹果树矮化密植，一亩地最多能种近200棵树，不仅亩产可以轻松翻番甚至更多，也便于栽培管理操作。
　　20世纪70年代，我国曾引进欧美的矮化砧木，但是由于土壤、气候等条件限制，虽基本摸清了各矮化砧木的特性，但生产上几乎均以失败告终。21世纪初，我国又掀起大量进口欧洲矮化砧木的高潮，虽然少数地区有成功案例，但因同样原因，“拿来主义”的效果并不好。“这就是苹果产业的‘卡脖子’问题。”韩振海暗下决心，“一定要带团队培育出中国自己的苹果矮化砧木。”
