Want Your Shot At Colorado's $1 Million Vaccine Drawing, But Can't Find Your Record In The State Database? You're Not Alone

Hart Van Denburg/CPR News
Denver nurse and volunteer Shani Jones puts a shot of Modern vaccine in the arm of Angel Martinez of Henderson at a COVID 19 vaccination clinic hosted by Second Chance Center in Aurora on Friday, May 14, 2021.
The $1 million drawings announced this week to encourage COVID-19 vaccinations have exposed gaps in a state vaccine database while pointing up inequities among those who might get a shot at the cash.
Among those who might be shut out, at least for now, are military veterans who received their vaccinations at Veterans Administration facilities in the state.
The announcement by Gov. Jared Polis on Tuesday prompted scores of Coloradans to search the state s immunization database only to find that their shots aren t displayed when they search by name, date of birth and contact information. One was Scott Lee, a 37-year-old Navy veteran in Centennial who got shots through the VA. ....

With Plenty Of COVID Vaccines In Stock, Colorado's New Focus Is On Younger Residents

Hart Van Denburg/CPR News
Pharmacy clinical manager Dr. Suzanne May pushes a sodium chloride solution into a vial of COVID-19 vaccine at left, at North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton, Dec. 17, 2020. The vaccine in the vials come in a concentrated form. May estimates that there are seven doses per vial once diluted.
Looking to expand vaccinations to younger residents, the state is shifting its strategy to prioritize getting shots in arms over preserving doses.
For months, when supply was tight, the vaccine effort aimed to make sure all doses were used. But now supply is ample and the push is to get shots out far and wide to anyone who is eligible and wants one. ....

Is Colorado Seeing More COVID Vaccine Hesitancy? The Number Of Appointments Available Say Yes

Vaccination rates are lagging for Latino and Black Coloradans, as well as for men.
These two are exactly the kinds of people the state is hoping to reach now. They’re both young he’s 22, she’s 18 and from groups Latinx and Black Coloradans whose vaccination rates lag behind their share of the population.
But at least so far on this day last week at this site, they don’t have a lot of company. Nurse Hayley DeForest said it’s been pretty quiet.
“Demand, I feel like has gone down a little bit,” De Forest said. “It s just trying to figure out who still needs vaccines, because obviously, we have not vaccinated the entire population.” ....

In Colorado, COVID Case Rates Are The Lowest Where Vaccination Rates Are The Highest (And Vice Versa)

Hart Van Denburg/CPR News
Ellis Linville, Sr., gets his second COVID-19 shot, from Dr. Sunita Sharma at Shorter AME Church in Denver, Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021.
Vaccinations are limiting the spread of the coronavirus in the Colorado communities where they are being most accepted.
Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state’s epidemiologist, compared vaccination rates in the state s 10 largest counties with COVID-19 case rates. At a Tuesday COVID-19 update, she said case rates are highest in locations where vaccination rates are lowest and vice versa.
What we re really seeing here is our first clear sign, our first promising indication, that we re seeing community-level protection from vaccination, Herlihy said. ....

Boxes containing the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine sit next to vials in the pharmacy of National Jewish Hospital for distribution early Saturday, March 6, 2021, in east Denver. Volunteers worked with nurses and physicians from National Jewish to administer 2,500 vaccinations of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine that requires a single shot instead of two like the other vaccines.
Updated 6:33 p.m.
Colorado vaccine providers will immediately start using the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine now that a federal health advisory committee recommended that a pause on the vaccine should end.
“We are happy to have this highly effective, one-dose vaccine back as an option for Coloradans,” said Dr. Eric France, the state health department’s chief medical officer, in a statement. “We appreciate the caution the CDC and FDA took to evaluate the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and are ready to ramp back up distribution as quickly as possible.” ....
