Ukraine was serving as a sort of buffer zone for nato, and russia, and that buffer will be gone. there were a couple of interesting and somewhat concerning moments even today on this issue. the russian ministry of defense noted that some of ukraine s air force, some old mig fighters are sitting part right now in romania where the assumption is that the russians would not dare bomb them so they issued a warning that if a ukrainian plane lifts off from foreign territory and gets engaged with russians over ukraine, that foreign territory will be considered to be a combatant. and this gets right at what president biden s worried about which is that he doesn t want to put this air cap over ukraine because enforcing it would definitely put american pilots right up against russian pilots. ....

Do you think he will say if you give the ukrainian air force the ability to fly again you are a combatant. it s hard to know what he will do. he is the one to make a decision, whether to use a tactical nuclear weapon, part of the russian military doctrine, we hope and pray that never happens, but i think it s a bluff because i don t see any difference providing stingers and javelin missiles and other lethal defensive equipment and providing them airplanes. so, i think as long as it s ukrainians flying the airplanes, it s not nato partners, actually in ukraine fighting on the ground, that we should call mr. putin s bluff. john: on the point of nuclear weapons, joe, one of the world experts in nuclear weapons will be joining us later this hour. texas senator john cornyn, good to be with you in the studio. thanks for rolling, sorry for the technical difficulties. sandra: 2 million, that s how ....

CNN The Lead With Jake Tapper March 9, 2022 22:29:00

But logistically, what is the issue there? i think the concern would be that these would be, at that point, nato jets. and it was unclear whether the intent was to have them operate from ramstein, the nato base in germany, or to get them into ukraine. i for one would not support having them operate out of germany. i think that does put us into the conflict. but logistically, if you can get those jets into western ukraine, support them out of a place like lviv, get them in the air, i think they could have impact. why can t poland just transfer them themselves? they re right on the border with ukraine. a very good question. i think the answer is the poles are concerned about risk. concerned about russia identifying them individually as stepping into the war as a combatant. if write the leader of poland, i would be concerned about that, too. what poland is trying to do logically enough torsion get the whole alliance behind the idea. ....

well, fred, it has some merit. there are about 23 mig-29s in poland right now that could be used for this. and the only big thing that stands in the way of this is the fact that the airfields that mig-29s or any other aircraft would use to defend ukraine are being attacked right now by the russians. so it s a tenuous issue. it s going to be a touch and go, literally and figuratively in this case. but we have to do something. and this might just be the one thing that might work. that s a big obstacle, not having the airfields in country, in ukraine, but then if that were the case that they didn t have enough airfields, which to launch from, do you see the ukrainian pilots would be able to launch those planes from poland, from those airfields and then into ukraine? well, that would then involve poland the way russia would see it would be that poland would then become a combatant nation ....

Molotov cocktail be? and and then, there is the risks to them which is clear. is it helpful? or in some ways, not in apurely military sense? it s tremendously heartening to see the people of ukraine stepping up to defend their country. it s just been inspiring to see. but, you know, trained soldiers take time to not just build individual skills but team skills that are so vital in a military organization. the other problem with civilians picking up weapons in this circumstance is we run the risk of russians seeing every ukrainian civilian as a combatant and that can lead to tragic outcomes. i i am curious in the broader picture, um, do you think what is happening in ukraine, what has happened, has exposed weaknesses in the nato defense strategy in in europe in terms of containing a threat? i mean, and we have mentioned this, too. putin he s been sanctioned. he has been resanctioned. ....
