Iron and nickel vapours found in cold atmosphere of comets for first time

Iron and nickel vapours found in cold atmosphere of comets for first time
‘It was a big surprise to detect iron and nickel atoms in the atmosphere of all the comets we have observed in the last two decades .
19 May, 2021 15:00
Scientists have spoken of their “big surprise” after discovering iron and nickel vapours in the ultra-cold atmosphere of comets for the first time.
These heavy metals are usually associated with hot environments, but astronomers found atoms of nickel and iron in the clouds of dust and gas surrounding distant comets, more than 480 million kilometres from the Sun (about three times the distance between the Earth and the Sun). ....

What Does a Meteor Shower Look Like? What Time Is Best to See the Eta Aquariids

What Does a Meteor Shower Look Like? What Time Is Best to See the Eta Aquariids
On 5/5/21 at 12:39 PM EDT
The Eta Aquariids meteor shower has reached its peak, but what should skygazers look out for and when is the best time to watch?
Meteor showers are celestial events during which several meteors appear to originate from a single point in the night sky known as the radiant. These events take place when the Earth passes through streams of cosmic debris left behind by comets and, in rare cases, asteroids.
Meteors are the streaks of light we see in the sky when tiny fragments of space debris enter the Earth s atmosphere and burn up at high speed. These streaks of light are popularly referred to as shooting stars. ....

Bad Astronomy | 5200 tons of meteorite dust falls to Earth every year

New research looking at micrometeorites literally microscopic bits of meteorites, particles of rocks and metals from space that fall to Earth shows that about
5,200 tons of this cosmic debris settles onto the ground every year. 5.2 million kilos per annum, or about 14 tons per day. At
least. That s equivalent to the mass of a garbage truck every day.
Oof.
Also, this is very wee stuff, smaller than a millimeter in size and some smaller than the width of a human hair. There s no reason to panic
. It slows from interplanetary speeds to basically 0 way up in the atmosphere and then drifts down to the ground. It s no danger, and in fact is quite welcome, since it tells us a lot about what s going on in space. ....

A watercolour sky

A watercolour sky
The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the darkest and most peaceful astronomical sites on Earth and has, as a result, proven to be the perfect location for ESO’s various observatories and powerful instruments.
This view shows ESO’s Paranal Observatory, home to the behemoth Very Large Telescope (VLT). The constituent telescopes of the VLT can be seen standing sentinel beneath a star-studded sky featuring the glittering arch of our Galaxy, and the glowing Magellanic Clouds (left). As this image demonstrates, the sky over Paranal isn’t completely dark; after sunset, the beauty of the Universe is overshadowed by that of Earth’s own atmosphere, which glows in multiple hues and paints the sky like a watercolour. The playful brushstrokes of the faraway emission nebulae that adorn the Milky Way and the constellation of Orion (The Hunter) in the upper centre of the frame, are joined by the soft swaths of green, yellow, red, and orange lying close to th ....
