Facebook’s Oversight Board has officially chimed in on its first five cases — and the rulings are certainly interesting.
The Oversight Board chose to overturn Facebook’s decision to remove content in four out of the five cases. As a result, Facebook must restore those four posts.
The most bizarre
decision from the board involved a post that was flagged as anti-Muslim hate speech. A user from Myanmar posted a picture of a Syrian toddler who drowned while trying to reach Europe in 2015. Along with the photo, they included a comment which Facebook translated as, “[there is] something wrong with Muslims psychologically.” ....

Facebook’s self-regulatory ‘Oversight Board’ (FOB) has delivered its first batch of decisions on contested content moderation decisions almost two months after picking its first cases.
A long time in the making, the FOB is part of Facebook’s crisis PR push to distance its business from the impact of controversial content moderation decisions by creating a review body to handle a tiny fraction of the complaints its content takedowns attract. Facebook s Oversight Board ruled on Thursday that the social media giant was incorrect in removing four out of five pieces of content, which included posts removed for violating rules on hate speech and misinformation pertaining to COVID-19.
None of these cases had easy answers and deliberations revealed the enormous complexity of the issues involved, the Oversight Board said in a press release on Thursday.
The board s ruling serves as a test to vet and criticize the way the social media company handles problematic content posted to the platform. Following the review, the board came up with nine policy recommendations for the company, including calling on Facebook to be clearer about its rules and what is allowed on its platform. ....
