Facebook Oversight Board Upholds Permanent Trump Ban For Creating Serious Risk Of Violence
Published: May 5, 2021
Facebook s oversight board on Wednesday decided
to uphold the company s indefinite suspension of former president Donald Trump, claiming that Trump’s posts during the Capitol riot severely violated Facebook’s rules and encouraged and legitimized violence.
The Board also found Facebook violated its own rules by imposing a suspension that was ‘indefinite.’ This penalty is not described in Facebook’s content policies. It has no clear criteria and gives Facebook total discretion on when to impose or lift it.

The Facebook Oversight Board has found the social network was right to restrict former President Trump’s account in early January 2021, though has insisted on a review of the indefinite suspension the then-President faced on Facebook. The results of the hotly-anticipated – and undoubtedly divisive – Oversight Board investigation centered on Facebook’s reaction to incendiary posts by Trump during the DC Capitol Building riot on January 6.
Then, while the 2020 election results were still being contested, an insurrectionist mob forcibly entered the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Five people died, and more were injured. Multiple investigations into the attack are underway, with the FBI having already charged numerous people for their role in the violence. ....

Oversight Board Tells Facebook It Needs To Shape Up And Be More Careful About Silencing Minorities Seeking To Criticize The Powerful

Tomorrow, the Oversight Board is set to reveal its opinion on whether Facebook made the right decision in banning former President Trump. And that will get tons of attention. But the Board came out with an interesting decision last week regarding a content takedown in India, that got almost no attention at all.
Just last week, we wrote about an ongoing issue in India, where the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed in almost every way possible in dealing with the COVID pandemic, but has decided the best thing to focus on right now is silencing critics on Twitter. That backdrop is pretty important considering that the very next day, the Oversight Board scolded Facebook for taking down content criticizing Modi s government. ....
