flood walls. those walls could fail. the city s mayor talked about his concerns with our ed lavandera. are you worried about it flooding? this is the heart of the city right here. it is the heart of the city, primarily protected by that wall right there. it would take a failure of that wall before this would be at risk. what we re really concerned about is that high river stage raising the water level back where the lake is, and if that got topped, because that level of protection is not nearly as high as that, if that got topped, the water is going to flow throughout the city. it won t be held within a particular compartment of the city. we re an island, the river on one side and both our eastern boundaries and south even boundaries is the river, the northern and western boundaries is the lake. this water threat surrounds you? absolutely. it s starting to lap up under the planks of the wharf. so the water is just now getting here. it will be water all the way ....

they re going to have to sacrifice some homes and businesses in order to save many, many more. the army corps expected to open louisiana s huge morganza spillway when the river flow hits 1.5 million cubic feet per second. what does that mean? all you need to know is that rate continues to go up and getting closer and closer to that point. the spillway was last opened in 1973, but we are expecting it today and maybe in the next few hours. now, doing that, what does that do? it takes the pressure off levees in baton rouge and new orleans and it will also flood seven louisiana parishes west of the river. the national guard is out. you see them here, they have been working around the clock filling sandbags in morgan city. that s a community of 12,000 that is expected to be just flooded out when this water is released. can you imagine this, folks? people just standing by and waiting on the water to come and destroy everything. it s worse than we thought. it s really worse ....

u.s. army corps of engineers is expected to open the floodgates on the morganza spillway. the plan is to slowly divert floodwaters away from baton rouge and new orleans. the spillway has not been opened in nearly 40 years. the move will flood other areas in south central louisiana. and this map right here you re about to see it, it says it all. areas in yellow could get up to 20 feet of water and green up to 15 feet. we ll have live coverage of a briefing by the u.s. army corps of engineers at 2:00 eastern time. in areas like morgan city, louisiana, could get disastrous flooding. morgan city is protected by flood walls. but those walls could fail. the city s mayor talked about his concerns with her ed lavandera. reporter: are you worried about it flooding? this is the heart of the city. it is. and it s primarily protected by that wall right there. it would take a failure of that wall, i think, before this would really be at risk. what we re really concerned about ....

For the families and others who have moved on and others who have not moved as far. it is always that scar that they have got, but for others, to some, it is more raw than others. i think that this helps a little bit, and gives them a little sense of justice and another compartment that they might be able to close at the tragedy. does it also help to bring back, to the important and the relevant information of how the people that are doing today, and the ones who survived, and are suffering now ten years later with different respiratory issues from what they suffered from that day having to run into that building? does it bring relevance to the situations of what their lives are today and help remind americans about what happened that day? well, you know, this is something they live with everyday and like you say, we in the news media, we go from weddings to charlie sheen to something important like this, and it does help them, i think get some of to attention they need to the issu ....
