NA passes bill to ban corporal punishment in Islamabad - Newspaper


ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to ban corporal punishment in educational institutions and seminaries in the capital and referred another bill seeking to make compulsory the teaching of Arabic language in educational institutions to the standing committee concerned.
The ICT Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Bill calls for banning all forms of corporal punishment in educational institutions, including formal, non-formal and seminaries, in both the public and private sectors as well as childcare institutions and rehabilitation centres.
Defining punishment, the bill stated: “Any punishment in which physical force is used and intended to cause some degree of pain or discomfort, however light it may be, which may involve hitting (smacking, slapping, spanking) a child with the hand or with an implement (a whip, stick, belt, shoe, wooden spoon, etc.” ....

Why Pakistan's plan of making Arabic compulsory in schools is bizarre

In every school of Islamabad, every child shall henceforth be compelled to study the Arabic language from Class 1 to Class 5. Thereafter he or she shall learn Arabic grammar from Class 6 to Class 12. By unanimous vote, that is what the Senate of Pakistan has decided.
Introduced on February 1 as a private member’s bill by Senator Javed Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), the Compulsory Teaching of Arabic Language Bill, 2020, will become an act of Pakistan parliament once approved by the National Assembly. Thereafter it is likely to be applied across the country.

Academics sceptic about recently-passed Senate bill for compulsory Arabic education

Educators and academics have expressed reservations over a recently-passed bill from the Senate for making the teaching of Arabic compulsory at all the educational institutions, saying that the economic prospects of teaching Arabic are low and adding more languages to the curriculum will further deteriorate the teaching standards of mathematics and science subjects.
A few days earlier, the Senate of Pakistan passed the Compulsory Teaching of Arabic Language Bill 2020, to make Arabic a compulsory subject at all the educational institutions.
Talking to The News, a number of educators said the legislators should try to fill the loopholes of the educational system instead of overburdening the students. They opined that about 74 per cent of students from grade I to X were learning two languages Urdu and English – as compulsory subjects. Likewise, learning their mother tongue in various regions of the country was also compulsory for the stud ....

Senate passes bill making teaching of Arabic compulsory in capital - Newspaper


ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Monday passed a bill making the teaching of Arabic language compulsory in all educational institutions in the federal capital.
The house witnessed fiery speeches following opposition by Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Raza Rabbani who later, however, did not vote against the bill.
The ‘Compulsory Teaching of Arabic Language Bill 2020’ had been introduced as a private member’s bill by Javed Abbasi of the PML-N in August last year. It will become an act of parliament after its passage from National Assembly.
Arabic language will be taught from class I to V and grammar from VI to XII ....
