Coronavirus: New COVID-19 strain detected in Rio de Janeiro

The United Kingdom drew worldwide media attention when they reported late last week that a new
COVID-19 strain had been detected.
According to studies carried out by the National Laboratory of Computational Science (LNCC), linked to Brazil s Ministry of Science and Technology and in partnership with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the strain was first detected in Rio in October.
Researchers say that 60 percent of cases with this strain are located in Rio but that measures must be taken to avoid it spreading further.
Brazil is the country with the third-most cases in the world, after the United States of America and India. ....

How nearby galaxies form their stars

 E-Mail
Stars are born in dense clouds of molecular hydrogen gas that permeates interstellar space of most galaxies. While the physics of star formation is complex, recent years have seen substantial progress towards understanding how stars form in a galactic environment. What ultimately determines the level of star formation in galaxies, however, remains an open question.
In principle, two main factors influence the star formation activity: The amount of molecular gas that is present in galaxies and the timescale over which the gas reservoir is depleted by converting it into stars. While the gas mass of galaxies is regulated by a competition between gas inflows, outflows and consumption, the physics of the gas-to-star conversion is currently not well understood. Given its potentially critical role, many efforts have been undertaken to determine the gas depletion timescale observationally. However, these efforts resulted in conflicting findings partly because of the chall ....

A Year Like No Other: GT Computing Flourishes in 2020

Despite having more than its fair share of difficulties, 2020 was a successful year for the College of Computing community. We launched a new school, moved up in the national rankings, welcomed two new chairs, and pushed forward on ethics and equity in computing. We also met head-on the unprecedented challenges brought on by the global pandemic. Linked below are just a few of the big stories that reflect the achievements of GT Computing students, faculty, staff, and alumni in 2020.
Academic
Among the biggest stories of 2020 was the announcement of a new school within the College and that encompasses many disciplines and faculty from Computing as well as other Georgia Tech colleges. The School of Cybersecurity and Privacy (SCP) is the first school dedicated to cybersecurity and privacy at a public university. ....
