HERD IMMUNITY TO STOP COVID IT’S BEEN A GOAL SINCE THE START OF THE VACCINE ROLL-OUT, BUT ONE THAT SOME BELIEVE MAY GETTING OUT OF REACH. IS REACHING HERD IMMUNITY REALISTIC? I THINK IN THE NEAR TERM IT’S UNLIKELY. KENT: DR. MATT ANDERSON OF UW HEALTH SAYS WITH NEWERR, HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS VARIANTS OF COVID, HERD IMMUNITY WOULD REQUIRE 75-OR-80% OF THE POPULATION TO BE VACCINATED. CURRENTLY JUST OVER 43% OF WISCONSINITES HAVE HAD AT LEAST DOSE OF VACCINE AND THE RATE AT WHICH PEOPLE ARE GETTING SHOTS IS DROPPING. ALSO, A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION IS CHILDREN UNDER AGE 15 WHO AREN’T YET ELIGIBLE FOR THE VACCINE. I THINK IT IS UNLIKELY THAT WE WILL HIT HERD IMMUNITY BEFORE WE HAVE THOSE 0-15 S INCLUDED IN THE POPULATION. SOME PEOPLE, GETTING THEIR SHOTS ON MONDAY, HAD DOUBTS ABOUT REACHING HERD IMMUNITY. KENT: DO YOU THINK WE’RE GOING TO REACH THOSE LEVELS WE NEED TO REACH ....

Restaurants struggle to find workers as customers slowly return

Updated: 6:12 PM CDT Apr 26, 2021
The restaurant industry, devastated by the pandemic, is facing a new challenge.Continuing Coverage: Coronavirus in WisconsinA shortage of workers is forcing some restaurants to scale back their hours.Others are offering bonuses to new employees. As restaurants reopen and capacity limits increase, it appears some customers are ready to return. But that may not be the case for restaurant workers. We can t open up extra days, we can t do lunch service because we don t have staff, DanDan owner Dan Jacobs said.He said restaurants everywhere are struggling to get back workers who were laid off from jobs that typically offer low pay and lower job security. We abandoned our staff as an industry, and they ve gone to do other things, Jacobs said. For servers making $2.13 an hour and depending on the generosity of others for their wages, I don t blame them at all. A new billboard puts the call out for needed restaurant workers.A WISN 12 search ....

Pfizer Vaccine: Wisconsin watching studies in kids

Updated: 5:20 PM CDT Apr 25, 2021
Matt Smith
State health officials are closely watching Pfizer as it conducts clinical trials of its COVID-19 vaccine on infants as young as six-months-old. Continuing Coverage: Coronavirus in Wisconsin If we want to get to herd immunity at 80 or 90 percent, we ve got to tackle that, said Dr. James Conway, UW Health’s director of immunization programs. We can t just depend on adults. Conway said the vaccine could be approved for kids aged 12 to 15 years old by mid-summer and eventually expand to kids 6 to 11 years old by the end of the year, and all kids 6 months or older by sometime in 2022. We really need to balance that safety piece and making sure we absolutely guarantee the vaccines are appropriate in that age group and there are no side effects, Conway said. State health officials said Thursday about 2.15 million Wisconsinites still need a first vaccination shot for the state to reach herd immunity at 80% ....
