KC baker takes third in competition with mermaid gingerbread sculpture

KMBC 9 News Staff
A Kansas City baker is celebrating a major accomplishment: He took third place in a national gingerbread competition. Thomas Blake Hogan is the artist behind this amazing mermaid creation. He took third place in the National Gingerbread House Competition hosted by the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. "This competition is no joke!" Hogan said. "It has been around for 27 years and the skill level is so high amongst the competitors that you literally have to work on your gingerbread creations for months to even have a hope of placing in the top 10."Hogan started designing this project back in July. Believe it or not, the entire sculpture is 100% edible.Hogan said 75% of the sculpture is made of gingerbread, which is even more amazing looking at the incredible detail work he added. And everything is created by hand. No preexisting shapes or molds were used. “This was my first time entering the national gingerbread house competition," he said. "I first learned about the competition many years ago after seeing it featured on television. I got into cake decorating and sugar arts when I was in high school. I loved that you could create full works of art out of edible materials." Even more amazing — baking is just a hobby for Hogan. He's actually a professional musical theater performer, but the pandemic has kept him out of work. Instead, Hogan threw his time into this masterpiece, and it paid off. Hogan said this isn't the first recognition he's received for his work. He's won Julia M. Usher's Cookie Art competition twice, was a finalist for the 2019 Cookie Award by Cake Masters Magazine in England and was featured on Food Network's Christmas Cookie Challenge just last week."I feel incredibly honored to have placed," Hogan said, "Especially considering it was my first time entering. I am the first competitor from Kansas City, and I believe the state of Missouri, to even be a finalist, let alone an award winner at the National Gingerbread House Competition. I greatly look forward to upping my game and competing again next year!”
