Progressive Democrats target parole reform

With the budget passed and solitary confinement restrictions signed into law, progressive Democrats in the state Senate and Assembly have their sights set on their next criminal justice goal this session: Parole reform.
Incarcerated New Yorkers, lawmakers and advocates rallied Monday and Tuesday as part of National Second Chance Month pushing the Legislature to enact parole reform, which could lead to the release of hundreds of incarcerated people in the state’s prison system, with the passage of two proposed bills this session: The Fair & Timely Parole Act and Elder Parole.
“Today, we stand here with our hearts repeatedly broken in the face of racism in America,” Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa, D-Manhattan, said Tuesday. “... We know the disparities in our failed parole system in New York keeps our communities incarcerated. We know that Black and brown people are disproportionately denied parole. Make no mistake: Life without parole is a sentence to death behind bars.”

'Bear witness': What one NY lawmaker saw when she visited Auburn prison

Elevator-sized cells. "Pens" for incarcerated individuals placed in solitary confinement to spend an hour each day outdoors. How COVID-19 affected this maximum-security prison.
When Assemblywoman Anna Kelles visited Auburn Correctional Facility, she felt it was her duty to "bear witness" — to observe the conditions at the prison, a 205-year-old facility that is one of the oldest in the country.
Kelles, D-Ithaca, shared her experience during a conference call last week organized by several advocacy groups, including the Center for Community Alternatives, Release Aging People in Prison, #HALTsolitary Confinement Campaign and New York Communities for Change.
A group of legislators visited jails, prisons and immigration detention centers across the state. State Sen. Julia Salazar, the new chair of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee, was the first to visit a correctional facility. She toured Fishkill Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in the Hudson Valley.

Set the Senate straight: Andrea Stewart-Cousins must use Luis Sepúlveda's demotion for more reform

State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins was absolutely right to swiftly sanction the Bronx’s Luis Sepúlveda, stripping him of committee assignments, after his arrest this week on charges he assaulted his wife. (Ironically, he was chairman of the Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee.)

Sepúlveda accused of strangling his wife

SHARE:
State Sen. Luis Sepúlveda, a Democrat from the Bronx, turned himself into the New York City Police Department Tuesday morning after being charged with strangling his wife.
That was first reported by News 12 reporter Jessica Cunnington.
Sepúlveda’s lawyer, Marvin Ray Raskin, said in an emailed statement the “true history of the relationship” needs to be understood and that the facts that present themselves will clear his name.”
"Mr. Sepúlveda has been the victim of recurring physical violence by his estranged spouse for approximately nine years, a situation he has endured because of the young child they share together,” Raskin said. “This false accusation is a calculated attempt by a disgruntled party to leverage a divorce settlement from a case she filed in Florida this past November.”
