New wireless system can restore communication and mobility in people with paralysis

New wireless system can restore communication and mobility in people with paralysis
Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are an emerging assistive technology, enabling people with paralysis to type on computer screens or manipulate robotic prostheses just by thinking about moving their own bodies. For years, investigational BCIs used in clinical trials have required cables to connect the sensing array in the brain to computers that decode the signals and use them to drive external devices.
Now, for the first time, BrainGate clinical trial participants with tetraplegia have demonstrated use of an intracortical wireless BCI with an external wireless transmitter. The system is capable of transmitting brain signals at single-neuron resolution and in full broadband fidelity without physically tethering the user to a decoding system. ....

Study shows that attention and working memory share the same neural mechanisms

Study shows that attention and working memory share the same neural mechanisms
In 1890, psychologist William James described attention as the spotlight we shine not only on the world around us, but also on the contents of our minds.
Most cognitive scientists since then have drawn a sharp distinction between what James termed sensorial attention and intellectual attention, now usually called attention and working memory, but James saw them as two varieties of the same mental process.
New research by Princeton neuroscientists suggests that James was on to something, finding that attention to the outside world and attention to our own thoughts are actually two sides of the same neural coin. What s more, they have observed the coin as it flips inside the brain. ....

Functional connectivity in brain's fatigue network changes in response to cognitive fatigue

Functional connectivity in brain s fatigue network changes in response to cognitive fatigue
Kessler Foundation researchers have demonstrated changes in the functional connectivity within the fatigue network in response to cognitive fatigue. This finding, the first of its kind, was reported in
Scientific Reports on December 14, 2020 in the open access article, Using functional connectivity changes associated with cognitive fatigue to delineate a fatigue network (doi: 10.1038//s41598-020-78768-3).
The authors are Glenn Wylie, DPhil, Brian Yao, PhD, Helen M. Genova, PhD, Michele H. Chen, PhD, and John DeLuca, PhD, of Kessler Foundation. All have faculty appointments at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Dr. Wylie is also a research scientist at The Department of Veterans Affairs War-related Injury and Illness Study Center at the New Jersey Healthcare System. ....

Researchers find new way to prevent attention deficits associated with Fragile X syndrome

Researchers find new way to prevent attention deficits associated with Fragile X syndrome
Mount Sinai Researchers find a new way to prevent attention deficits associated with Fragile X, a leading genetic cause of autism, in an animal model.

Bottom line:
The adolescent maturation of the frontal cortex is important for establishing cognitive function, and disruption of this process is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.
This study uncovered a new molecular driver of frontal circuit maturation that is essential for cognitive function, and demonstrated, in an animal model, that this mechanism can be targeted to restore attention deficits caused by a leading genetic cause of autism. ....
