Will keep negotiating with firefighters union May 5, 2021 YOUNGSTOWN City council voted 6-0 Tuesday to reject the recommendation of fact finder James E. Rimmel for a new three-year contract with the city firefighters union. The contract would have included a 1 percent annual raise and 1.25 percent “pandemic lump sum” bonuses in the first two years. Law Director Jeff Limbian said prior to the meeting that the law department was recommending council reject the fact finder’s recommendation so the city could continue negotiating. “We think we are fairly close on the issues,” Limbian said. After the vote, Councilman Mike Ray said, “Just because we do reject it, there was some good points, and I hope the administration can move forward with some successful negotations.” ....

There are two definite “no” votes for a pay raise for Law Director Jeff Limbian and two others who won’t commit. Approval requires a majority of council to vote for the raises. There are enough votes now in support of increasing the salary for Kyle Miasek, the interim finance director. But Councilwoman Basia Adamczak, D-7th Ward, who supports raises for both, has said she won’t be at the next meeting on Jan. 20, which could impact whether Mayor Jamael Tito Brown introduces it for that meeting. ....
Jan 8, 2021 The Ohio Democratic Party’s executive committee will meet Thursday to select a new leader and will elect the first woman to the position. It’s almost certain Liz Walters, Summit County Council president and former state party executive and political director, has the necessary votes. While there are five other candidates in the race, the only serious challenger to Walters is Antoinette Wilson, a Columbus political consultant with a lot of wins under her belt. The biggest shakeup in the race occurred when Lou Gentile, a former state legislator from Steubenville, withdrew as candidate. His withdrawal letter didn’t provide details for his decision. But Gentile could see that the party’s key figures were backing Walters, and it was best to avoid a messy fight for the chairman’s position, especially because he was unlikely to win. ....
