Bill Brand, the mayor of Redondo Beach, has amassed power on a slow-growth platform. Now, a series of emails involving him and supporters are heightening criticism about their tactics.

The Redondo Beach City Council voted Tuesday night to keep the pallet homes, which currently houses formerly unhoused people, where it is on Kingsdale Ave. in North Redondo Beach.
The pallet homes opened in December of last year thanks to pandemic-related relief funding. The plan proposed last October was for them to remain in North Redondo for six months, and then to discuss an extension or relocation. There was some back-and-forth about the northern and southern parts of Redondo Beach sharing the responsibility of hosting the portable housing units.

Two fireworks shows set for Fourth of July in Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach residents this year will, for the first time, get a double dose of Independence Day fireworks.
The City Council voted this week to host its traditional fireworks show and also gave the OK for a local business association to hold its own pyrotechnic display after an all-day event.
Both of the displays will light up the night sky on July 4.
The city-sponsored blasts are typically launched out of Seaside Lagoon. But this year, Redondo Beach will shoot them off from land at King Harbor. Not using a barge to shoot them from the water will lessen the risk of losing money if the show has to be cancelled because of unforeseen potential coronavirus surges, said Councilmember Todd Loewenstein.

Redondo Beach shortens Seaside Lagoon season to give more prep time for BeachLife Festival

Seaside Lagoon’s shortened season will set the stage for the BeachLife music festival in Redondo Beach.
The City Council voted this week to operate the family swim area, which will reopen June 15 after being shuttered last summer because of the coronavirus pandemic, until Aug. 22 — shaving about two weeks off the end of the swim season to allow BeachLife organizers enough time to set up for the music festival. The move, though, could also have financial consequences for Redondo Beach.
The BeachLife Festival is scheduled for Sept. 10 to 12 at the lagoon. The festival debuted in 2019 but couldn’t have an encore last year because of bans on gathering.

The Redondo Beach City Council is continuing to push back against state lawmakers’ efforts to determine the city’s zoning and housing allocation. At its Tuesday meeting, the council unanimously agreed to advocate for the city’s right to judicially review state-mandated housing requirements and to oppose decisions about zoning made in Sacramento.
