Erie Mayor Joe Schember announced on March 11 that the City of Erie is expecting a big boost from the newly signed American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
Schember said "According to estimates, we have seen in print, the City of Erie should receive just over $79 million in federal funds, which will help us deal with the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and allow the city to recover lost revenue." Schember said his team will be looking for guidance on how the funds can be used, noting collaborative efforts with County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper and leaders of other funds receiving Erie County municipalities  "so that the people of our region can receive the most benefit possible."

Montgomery: Alabama National Guard troops will begin work later this month administering COVID-19 vaccines in at least 24 rural counties, the state said Tuesday. The National Guard, with two 55-member mobile vaccination teams that can provide 8,000 doses a week, will work with public health and local officials to determine sites and logistics, Gov. Kay Ivey’s office said in a statement. Guard immunizations will start March 23. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed 15.2% of Alabama’s 4.9 million residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine that protects against the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. That was lower than any state other than neighboring Georgia, where 13.4% had received at least one shot. Guard teams will rotate through counties to provide shots to more people, the statement said. Ivey asked for patience because the state is still trying to get more vaccine from the federal government.

COVID-19: Daily update on coronavirus cases in Erie County and statewide

Erie County has witnessed far too many COVID-19 deaths over the past year, but county health officials said measures taken locally have helped keep the death rate relatively low comparted to elsewhere in the state.
The county's COVID-19 death rate throughout the pandemic is 139.4 deaths per 100,000, which is the 12th lowest among Pennsylvania's 67 counties.
Diligent disease investigation and contact tracing have helped keep the death rate from going higher, said Charlotte Berringer, R.N., director of community health for the Erie County Department of Health.
"We know that the earlier the cases are identified, the earlier the cases can be contacted and instructed on what signs to look for," Berringer said. "If things deteriorate, seeking medical care earlier rather than later ... will lower the death rate."

Erie officials resubmit 2016 proposal for marine sanctuary designation

Erie County is renewing its efforts to have the waters of Lake Erie classified as a national marine sanctuary, a designation that would protect 76.6 miles of shoreline, 759 square miles of the lake's central basin, and more than 100 shipwreck sites.
It would also expand tourism, draw more divers and researchers to the area, and parlay additional resources from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Monday marks five years since NOAA accepted the county's proposal into its inventory of sites to be considered for the formal designation. Applicants, however, are required to resubmit their proposals after five years have elapsed.

The county also reported 141 new cases Nov. 4-6.
Local health officials aren't sure whether this means the county is near the end of a nearly yearlong pandemic, or just experiencing a reprieve.
The county is still averaging nearly 54 new cases a day over the past week, higher than the totals at any time before mid-November, said Howard Nadworny, M.D., a Saint Vincent Hospital infectious diseases specialist and adviser to the Erie County Department of Health.
"Given that there were no major holidays in January and February, and February was colder and snowier, I suspect more people were masking and distancing (i.e. fewer
