April ushers in the season of construction as work officially begins on BRT

LONDON, ONT. --
The signs of spring are all around with warmer weather, flowers blooming, birds chirping, and the return of construction projects.
Yes, the season of construction is upon us once again, and this year it will see one of the City’s most talked about (and debated) initiatives finally break ground.
Phase one of the Downtown Loop of London’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) plan is set to begin.
Last week CTV News reported on the final use of the King Street bike lane through the downtown corridor as crews prepared to shut it down for construction.
The City’s BRT plan has undergone several changes over the years and was greatly scaled back from the original vision.

Sixth COVID-19 outbreak declared in Western University residence

MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ONT. --
Less than a week after a COVID-19 outbreak at Essex Hall was declared over, there is another outbreak at the Western University residence.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit declared a new outbreak at the residence on Sunday with approximately five cases.
That leaves six residences at Western in outbreak, with other active outbreaks at Elgin Hall, Ontario Hall, Saugeen-Maitland Hall, Medway-Sydenham Hall and Delaware Hall.
Just a handful of residences at the school, Lambton Hall, Perth Hall, Alumni Hall and London Hall, remain outbreak free.
There are also several community outbreaks associated with Western.
One outbreak is among facilities staff at the school, another was associated with a gathering of business students and a third with a series of parties in early March.

A taste of summer is possible later this week

LONDON, ONT. --
If current forecasts hold true we could be in for a taste of summer later this week.
As of 7:30 a.m. Monday it was just three degrees in London, Ont. but by the afternoon temperatures should climb to about 13 degrees, a relatively normal temperature for this time of year.
That follows a sunny Easter Sunday that felt perfectly balmy after a chillier windy Saturday.
But by Thursday this week we could see a high of 25 degrees and sunny weather.
We aren’t making any promises though as forecasts are always subject to change, but right now that’s exactly what Environment Canada is calling for.

OHL players remain hopeful for return despite provincial shutdown

LONDON, ONT. --
Mark Woolley has traded in his skates for rollerblades this month.
When the province put on the 'emergency brake', arenas were shut down, keeping Ontario Hockey League (OHL) players off the ice for all of April.
"You know when it's locked down after lockdown it's definitely difficult to stay positive," says Woolley, a defenceman for the Owen Sound Attack.
The St. Thomas, Ont. native recently finished his quarantine after a six-week stint playing professional hockey in Slovakia.
"We're hopeful to get games in before the NHL Draft," says Woolley.
"I know there's a lot of young kids and even guys the older guys are trying to earn contracts. People say is it even worth it to play the 20 games or whatever it may be?

'Pati-NO season' ; provincial shutdown closes outdoor dining for month of April

LONDON, ONT --
The sun is shining on a spring afternoon but the outdoor patio is empty.
"We never thought it would come to this," says Sean Cross, general manager of Kelsey's Roadhouse on Wonderland Road in London, Ont.
'We went to some expense taking time to build a new surround for the patio. We did improvements to our inner patio as well and built a stage for live music that we had booked starting next weekend. So there's a bunch of musicians that were depending on us to help them as well and we were looking forward to working with them too."
