Western will not offer residence spots to upper-year students next fall and will suspend all live-in residence soph positions.
According to an email sent to students Tuesday, the move will allow the university to guarantee beds for all incoming first-year students as “uncertainty associated with the variants of concern and the rollout of vaccines” hampered their ability to predict the need for social distancing in buildings next fall.
Western University said they still plan to run a residence orientation program in the fall, with hopes “residence sophs live off-campus and still provide peer mentorship, academic support and lead residence Orientation Week activities.”

Western University deals with another outbreak amid calls to expand vaccine rollout

LONDON, ONT. --
Less than a week after a COVID-19 outbreak at Essex Hall was declared over, there is another outbreak at the Western University residence.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is reporting a small number of cases at the residence.
But the outbreak, declared on Sunday, had students at the residence packing up and moving out a day later.
The main campus, however, looked like a ghost town of sorts, after Western announced a shift to online learning last week.
Part-time student and Western library employee Rachael Edwards said she’s concerned for students living in congregate settings.
“I’m worried for other students. All that and just how they’re dealing with it because I know it’s not easy to be in a residence and cooped up.”

Sixth COVID-19 outbreak declared in Western University residence

MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ONT. --
Less than a week after a COVID-19 outbreak at Essex Hall was declared over, there is another outbreak at the Western University residence.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit declared a new outbreak at the residence on Sunday with approximately five cases.
That leaves six residences at Western in outbreak, with other active outbreaks at Elgin Hall, Ontario Hall, Saugeen-Maitland Hall, Medway-Sydenham Hall and Delaware Hall.
Just a handful of residences at the school, Lambton Hall, Perth Hall, Alumni Hall and London Hall, remain outbreak free.
There are also several community outbreaks associated with Western.
One outbreak is among facilities staff at the school, another was associated with a gathering of business students and a third with a series of parties in early March.

Shepard said he knows how fall classes will be taught has been “top of mind” for current scholars and new students still considering Western as an option.
