13-year-old youths charged with assault, threatening kids with knives: CK police


 
WINDSOR, ONT. --
Two Chatham 13-year-olds are facing assault and weapon charges after an incident at a local park.
Chatham-Kent police responded to a disturbance at the Don Mahon Park on Wedgewood Avenue in Chatham around 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
Through investigation, police say they learned that two teens were threatening a group of kids in the park with knives. One youth was allegedly punched and kicked by the teens.
Officers say they located the teens a short time later in possession of several knives.
Both 13-year-old Chatham youths were arrested and charged with assault, being in possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, five counts of assault with a weapon and five counts of uttering threats. They were released to a parent pending a future court date of April 26, 2021.

Studio 4 items to be auctioned off as building gets demolished


 
WINDSOR, ONT. --
A Windsor strip club is coming down on Thursday, but some items will be available for auction.
A London-based company bought the former Studio 4 building.
Westdell Development Developments Corp, a commercial, office and residential real estate developer announced Jan. 26 the purchase of the building located at 1415 Huron Church Rd.
This site adds to the existing 8.48 acre development land owned by Westdell located at 1475 Huron church.
Joe Gagnon of Gagnon Demolition says they are planning to auction a number of items from the property with a portion of the proceeds going to local charities.
“It’s been a landmark in the community for a long time, coming right across from the border, everybody knows it, everybody knows the sign with the girl,” says Gagnon. “We’re going to be auctioning off a few of those items online and the majority of the portion is going to charity.”

French Bulldogs rank as second most popular breed


WINDSOR, ONT. --
A warning to all Labrador Retrievers, Frenchies are nipping at your heels.
According to the American Kennel Club’s latest rankings on the most popular dog breeds, French Bulldogs are moving in on long-time favourite labs, who have been on the top of the list for 30 straight years.
Being number two on the list is a major accomplishment for French Bulldogs. They ranked a distant 82nd 30 years ago.
The rest of the top 10 includes German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Bulldogs, Poodles, Beagles, Rottweilers, German Shorthaired Pointers and Dachshunds.

Essex County OPP seek information following Essex robbery


 
WINDSOR, ONT. --
Essex County OPP are searching for robbery suspects who allegedly broke into a home, assaulted the resident and stole a variety of items.
Police say officers received the report around 8 a.m. Wednesday that a robbery had just occurred at an Essex residence on Brien Avenue.
Two suspects entered the house, assaulted the victim, and made away with stolen goods fleeing in an unknown direction.
The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Vaccinations start Wednesday for Windsor's homeless population


 
WINDSOR, ONT. --
Some guests staying at the city’s emergency shelter were able to roll-up their sleeves Wednesday to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Province of Ontario prioritized vaccinations for those experiencing homelessness. City of Windsor staff is assisting the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and Essex-Windsor EMS with vaccinations at the Temporary Emergency Shelter at the Aquatic Centre (TESAC).
“It’s difficult to adhere to a ‘stay at home’ order, when you don’t have a home”, Mayor Drew Dilkens said in a news release. “We are grateful that our residents who face additional challenges from COVID-19 are able to access the vaccine.”

Body found in Thames River identified: Chatham-Kent police


 
WINDSOR, ONT. --
Chatham-Kent police have identified the man who was found in the Thames River Monday, police do not believe his death to be suspicious.
A post-mortem was conducted in London Tuesday. The man has been identified as 46-year-old Terry Want who was last seen on Oct. 23, 2020 in Chatham.
“Members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service offer their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Want,” a news release issued Wednesday said.
Police responded to the report of a human body in the river along Grande River Line in Dover Township Monday morning. The body was discovered by a resident who alerted police.

Alert issued due to increase in drug-related overdoses in Windsor-Essex


 
WINDSOR, ONT. --
There were 27 overdose-related emergency department visits last week, seven of which included opioids.
The Windsor-Essex Community Opioid and Substance Strategy (WECOSS) issued a community alert Tuesday evening after the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s surveillance and monitoring system identified an increase in overdoses between March 9 though 15.
According to the alert, of the seven opioid related overdoses five included fentanyl.
The WECOSS says these numbers are “significantly higher” in comparison to previous years for this week warranting the alert.
WECOSS partners include WECHU, Windsor Regional Hospital, Essex Windsor-EMS, Erie Shores Healthcare, and local police services.
The alert says the partners are monitoring the increase and are “working to understand more about these reported cases.”

30 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths reported in Windsor-Essex


 
WINDSOR, ONT. --
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is reporting no additional deaths and 30 new COVID-19 cases in the region on Wednesday.
Windsor-Essex has had a total of 13,475 confirmed cases of the virus, including 12,801 people who have recovered.
Here’s the breakdown of new cases:
2 cases are outbreak related
8 cases are close contacts of confirmed cases
1 case is community acquired
1 case is travel related to Michigan
18 case are still under investigation
WECHU says 273 cases are considered active. There are 38 local Variant of Concern (VOC) cases have been identified in Windsor-Essex, two are the B.1.1.7 variant first reported in the United Kingdom while the others are unknown.

Body recovered from Thames River: Chatham-Kent police
