Frontiers | High-throughput sequencing reveals the presence of novel and known viruses in diseased Paris yunnanensis

Viral diseases of Paris spp. have become serious problems in cultivation of this group of important medicinal plants in China. In this study, eight viruses were identified in the diseased plants of Paris yunnanensis by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and RT-PCR. These viruses include three novel viruses (two potyviruses and one nepovirus), Hippeastrum chlorotic ringspot virus (HCRV),Lychnis mottle virus (LycMoV), Paris mosaic necrosis virus (PMNV), Paris virus 1 and pepper mild mottle virus. The three new viruses were tentatively named Paris potyvirus 3 (ParPV-3), Paris potyvirus 4 (ParPV-4...

Frontiers | Octocorals in the Gulf of Aqaba exhibit high photosymbiont fidelity - Vimarsana News

Frontiers | Octocorals in the Gulf of Aqaba exhibit high photosymbiont fidelity

Symbiotic associations, widespread in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, are of considerable ecological importance. Many tropical coral species are holobionts, formed by the obligate association between a cnidarian host and endosymbiotic dinoflagellates of the family Symbiodiniaceae. The latter are abundant on coral reefs from very shallow water down to the upper mesophotic zone (30-70 meters). The research on scleractinians has revealed that the photosymbiont lineages present in the cnidarian host play an important role in the coral’s ability to thrive under different environmental conditio...

Frontiers | Fifty psychological and psychiatric terms to avoid: a list of inaccurate, misleading, misused, ambiguous, and logically confused words and phrases

The goal of this article is to promote clear thinking and clear writing among students and teachers of psychological science by curbing terminological misinformation and confusion. To this end, we present a provisional list of 50 commonly used terms in psychology, psychiatry, and allied fields that should be avoided, or at most used sparingly and with explicit caveats. We provide corrective information for students, instructors, and researchers regarding these terms, which we organize for expository purposes into five categories: inaccurate or misleading terms, frequently misused terms, ambigu...

Frontiers | Single-molecule dynamics suggest that ribosomes assemble at sites of translation in Bacillus subtilis - Vimarsana News

Frontiers | Single-molecule dynamics suggest that ribosomes assemble at sites of translation in Bacillus subtilis

Eukaryotic cells transcribe ribosomal RNA and largely assemble ribosomes in a structure called the nucleolus, where chromosomal regions containing rRNA operons are clustered. In bacteria, many rRNA operons cluster close to the origin regions that are positioned on the outer borders of nucleoids, close to polar areas, where translating 70S ribosomes are located. Because outer regions of the nucleoids contain the highest accumulation of RNA polymerase, it has been hypothesized that bacteria contain “nucleolus-like” structures. However, ribosome subunits freely diffuse through the entire cell...

Frontiers | The potential of conservation agriculture to improve nitrogen fixation in cowpea under the semi-arid conditions of Kenya - Vimarsana News

Frontiers | The potential of conservation agriculture to improve nitrogen fixation in cowpea under the semi-arid conditions of Kenya

Low-cost but productive crop intensification options are needed to assist smallholder farmers in the tropics to move away from poverty. This study assessed the capacity of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) to perform biological N fixation (BNF) under no-tillage practices, crop residue cover and intercropping with maize (Zea mays L.). The study was performed during the long rains of 2017 at Kiboko experimental station, located in semi-arid eastern Kenya. The research field trials had been running for three years (6 cropping seasons) by the time the sampling took place. The experimental set ...
