THE award-winning Castletown D-Day Centre on Portland has battled against the odds to establish itself as a must see-attraction - but is on the lookout for more volunteers to continue its success. The not-for-profit Community Interest Company relies on volunteers, income from entry tickets and community goodwill, to continue delivering experiences for its thousands of visitors. The venue was launched in 2017 and brings to life the important role that the Port of Portland played in the D-Day landings, while paying tribute to the incredible sacrifice of thousands of US, British and Allied troops whom left for the occupied beaches of France on 6 June 1944. ....
THE Mayor of Portland officially reopened the Castletown D-Day Centre this week ready for the summer season. Castletown D-Day Centre on Portland reopened on Wednesday - with staff and volunteers looking forward to a busy season ahead. The centre delivers an immersive experience, offering a unique chance to discover the important role played by the Port of Portland during the allied invasion of Northern France on D-Day in June 1944. The centre features new and improved displays for 2021 as well as a new addition to the vehicle collection. D-Day Centre Manager John Davis and his team of volunteers were on hand as Cllr West opened the centre, which is part of the Castletown Regeneration Project, spearheaded by Agincare Founder and Chairman Derek Luckhurst. ....
Dorset’s museums have had a fairly tough time during lockdown and are really looking forward to reopening to the public over the next few months. Lyme Regis Museum is built on the site of the home of Mary Anning, the world’s first great fossil hunter and celebrated its 100th birthday in March this year. The museum contains fossils found by Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot as well as one of scientific legend William Buckland’s famous plaster ‘shark poos’. They also have spectacular fossils discovered in more recent times including the head of a huge ichthyosaur. However the museum has a lot more than just fossils and, for example, their Writers’ Gallery contains Jane Austen’s cockade and material owned by the Austen family.
