The EU's ambassador to London today stoked the row over Northern Ireland insisting there is 'no alternative' to the protocol that unionists want scrapped.
Joao Vale de Almeida accused new DUP leader Edwin Poots of being 'unrealistic' after he raged that the rules were being used to 'punish' the UK for leaving the bloc.
He said 'Brexit created the problem' and the only solution was to implement the new rules 'pragmatically'.
There have been rising concerns that the post-Brexit rules agreed by Boris Johnson are fuelling sectarian tensions in Northern Ireland, amid unionist anger about obstacles to trade with the UK mainland.

Britons are today free to hug friends and go back inside pubs, restaurants, cinemas, friends homes and take their children to soft play centres despite Boris Johnson's top scientific advisors admitting they won't be doing any of those things themselves with the Indian variant on the up.
The Prime Minister has urged families to adopt a 'heavy dose of caution' as he brought in the biggest easing of covid rules amid an eight per cent rise in infections in a week and concerns the total scrapping of restrictions on June 21 is under threat.

Boris Johnson vowed to 'turbo-charge the Covid recovery' today as he unveiled a Queen's Speech for the 'Blue Wall' with moves to boost jobs, crack down on illegal immigration, and curb 'woke' culture.
The PM warned it is not enough to go back to pre-pandemic ways as the monarch laid out the package of legislation for the next parliamentary session.
In a state occasion stripped of most of the usual pomp and ceremony, the Queen - in her first major duty since the death of Prince Philip - said the country should be 'stronger, healthier and more prosperous than before'.

There are fears of a major spike in gas, oil and diesel prices after the 'jugular' of the U.S. fuel pipeline system was forced to suspend operations following a sophisticated cybersecurity attack.
The attack on Colonial Pipeline took place Friday, and affected some of its information technology systems. Operations remain shut down as of early Sunday morning.
The Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States and is responsible for transporting more than 100 million gallons of fuel daily through pipelines laid out between Texas and New Jersey.

Bolton has been revealed as the UK hotspot for the new Covid 19 strain detected in India which has been escalated to a 'variant of concern'.
Urgent measures to contain the variant are in the works in the town including surge testing and a strengthened vaccination campaign urging people to get the jab.
Areas within the BL3 postcode in Bolton, Greater Manchester, registered a small number of cases of the variant, leading to widespread testing.
Surge testing is increased testing (including door-to-door testing in some areas) and enhanced contact tracing in specific locations.
