The first step for photographer Tim Nguyen when working with the six dancers who became part of his CUBE project was a lengthy conversation about what he didn’t want.
It was during the summer and restrictions had been somewhat loosened in Calgary, which was in the middle of both a heatwave and enjoying the short-lived freedom of Alberta’s third stage of re-opening. The dancers, most of whom came from the University of Calgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts, had the tricky task of conveying Nguyen’s mental turmoil and crashing psyche. The photographer had been in a particularly dark place since the bottom fell out his professional life as a busy photographer for various dance and theatre groups across the city.
