Daniel Smith, the son of a man born enslaved during the Civil War and the last survivor of five siblings, has passed away.

Daniel Smith, an Army veteran who was 90 when he died at a hospital in Washington, D.C., was one of the last remaining children of enslaved Black Americans, and a rare direct link to slavery in the United States.

He grew up hearing stories from his father, who was born into bondage during the Civil War. Decades later, he marched for civil rights in Washington and Selma.
