He is head-over-heels happy, the way it’s supposed to be, but the trailing official is tail over teakettle. And if you’ve ever slipped while carrying a teakettle, don’t expect your afternoon guest sitting by the picture window in the parlor of your house not to laugh. Hats off – pun intended – to all officials who are out there running with the athletes, dodging balls and bodies. I really don’t know why more of them don’t get trucked or pull muscles. It is hazardous duty. I bail like a Boston Whaler when flow comes my way. A mask may be required, but a helmet is a better idea. ....

DAVE FREDERICK PHOTO Dave Frederick December 24, 2020 White heat - On a sun-drenched day in the summer of 2007, two blond white guys ran a barefoot marathon from Fenwick Island to Lewes. The waves of heat and bright whiteness made Andrew Rogan and Robert Campbell look like floating ghosts moving slowly searching for a hydration station. Ann Rogan was their support person. Andrew was entering his junior year at JMU, while Rob was to be a senior at Virginia Tech. I absolutely understood the sense of satisfaction and euphoria both young men felt pushing themselves to the physical brink. Rob is now a veterinarian in New Jersey – not sure which exit – while Andrew is working toward his master’s and teaching certification. ....
