BDC Capital launches $200 million fund to bolster Canada’s deep tech ecosystem
BDC Capital has announced the creation of a new $200 million CAD fund designed to invest in and support early-stage Canadian deep tech companies.
The Deep Tech Venture Fund marks Canada’s largest dedicated deep tech fund. The move follows BDC Capital’s recent investment in Montréal’s Boreal Ventures, a $26 million Québec-focused deep tech fund founded by BDC Capital alumni David Charbonneau.
“If we play our cards right… There will be tech champions headquartered here,” said Thomas Park, partner at BDC Capital’s Deep Tech Venture Fund.

Boreal Ventures launches $26 million fund investing in Québec’s early-stage deep tech startups
In partnership with Centech, Boreal Ventures has launched as a new venture capital fund that aims to invest in Québec tech startups at the pre-seed and seed stages.
Boreal has secured $26 million CAD in initial investment capital from Centech, the Government of Québec via Investissement Québec, Teralys Capital, Desjardins Capital, BDC Capital, Hewitt Group, and École de technologie supérieure.

The fund, which will be led by David Charbonneau, aims to support deep tech companies that emerge from Centech, a Montreal-based deeptech incubator, and Québec’s innovation ecosystem more broadly. Prior to founding Boreal, Charbonneau worked at BDC Capital’s Industrial, Cleantech and Energy (ICE) Venture Fund. BDC Capital is notably one of the investors in Boreal.

MONTREAL, Feb. 17, 2021 /CNW Telbec/ - Quebec welcomes a new player in its innovative ecosystem with the launch of Boreal Ventures, the first venture capital fund dedicated to high-tech ("deep tech") companies in Quebec. Created in partnership with Centech, a Montreal-based incubator specializing in technology, this fund will support the development of companies in the pre-seed and seed stages in science and engineering. With an initial investment capital of $26 million, Boreal Ventures will support companies that emerge from Centech and Quebec's innovative ecosystem. The start-ups targeted by this new fund operate in applied science (deep tech) sectors such as artificial intelligence, medical technologies, industry 4.0, and connected objects.
