Deaconess administered more than 170K COVID-19 tests in 2020

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - After testing numbers decreased during the week of Christmas, health officials at Deaconess anticipate those numbers to return to normal.
Director of Microbiology Dr. April Abbott says last week was a little slow, with just over 1,000 being tested each day. On average, Deaconess tests between 1,200-1,800 people for COVID-19 each day. On Monday, more than 1,200 new requests for testing were received.
On Monday, officials in Colorado have confirmed a case of the new strain of COVID-19 in their state. Dr. Abbott says the tests being done locally look at three different genes. This means that even if there was a variant in one of those genes, the test would be able to detect the virus in the other two.

Evansville Nurse Shares Why it's Important to Get COVID Vaccine

It's been a historical week, when it comes to medical advances in America. Last Friday, the FDA approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. In a trial, the Pfizer vaccine was 95% effective in preventing COVID-19, so hopefully this is the next step in ending this terrible pandemic. Health care workers have had the option to get the first of two doses of the vaccine. An email was sent to those that are eligible at this time. Tri-State healthcare workers began getting vaccinated this week.
My friend, Krystal Swanson, is a Registered Nurse, and she chose to be one of the first people to receive the vaccination. She works with COVID-19 patients everyday, and has a husband and little kids at home. Plus, she has asthma, so she felt like this was something she needed to do for her family. And as a frontline worker, Krystal wants to set a good example for the community.

a day. he was in bad condition when he went to the hospital at deaconess, but he's doing better here because he can speak to medical authorities. how big is 10 by 10? this is about the size of it. there's a bed in one corner, and then there's a toilet and a sink. a pretty small amount of space to move around in if you're not used to being locked up. this is about the size of the tray they have and the window. we have this tent, which is 10 by 10. imagine being in this 24 hours a day. if he's guilty of the crime he's accused of, people would say this is too good for him and too big. >> if you ask people where i am, you'll get lot of responses like

charge of that scene. they got the guy out of the boat. so extremely professional group, very, very good to work with. they did a fantastic job there. >> the decision to take him to deaconess. there were reports he'd be taken to a number of different hospitals. does his injuries or -- say anything as to why they took him to a particular -- that particular hospital, better security, better able to deal with trauma? >> there are decisions made by ems on where to take any patient based upon what's happening in the emergency room at that time. we did have a concern about taking him to the mount arbor hospital because the victim police officer was there. it would have presented a major security concern for us. i think that played a role in the decision. but they detoured not too far over. >> the decision not to read him his miranda rights even though at one point you see him getting out of the boat, in that picture he is conscience. how did that decision come about? >> this is a federal case
