CNN Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer November 3, 2015 22:11:00

And we saw that there were distinct differences between the signatures. even though it was just a millisecond. so if there is a little bit of sound, we can figure it out. so basically, even a millisecond could make a difference listening to that? you can tell whether its a high order explosion or a more low order event like a decompression and a tearing apart of the aircraft. richard, we know that the credibility of the russians. what they re going to say, the credibility for that matter of the egyptians, they have a lot of motives, if you will, to put various spin on what may be coming out. what kind of trust, what kind of credibility do they have in providing this kind of information to the world right now? reporter: the basically they are on trial and tested. i spoke this afternoon, wolf, to the egyptian tourism minister, he first of all said that he ....

Structural member being lost or a bomb on board. let s talk about what we do know about this particular plane s structural integrity. this metrojet, the tail of this very plane struck a runway somehow in cairo in 2001. what would the connection between that incident and this crash, what could it possibly be? it would be the nature of the repair and how good the repair was. tail strikes happen several times a year in the united states alone. i d probably say on estimate maybe every other month we have a major plane with a tail strike. it depends on how it s repaired. now if this plane had great service and great inspections and we would know that the repair was good and held, but, for example, in the crash of japan airlines 123 in 1985, there, a tail strike repair did not hold, it blew out. it caused a rapid decompression and the plane was uncontrollable. however, the difference between that one and this one, in that case, the airplane was able to ....

CNN The Lead With Jake Tapper November 2, 2015 21:19:00

Cairo. if there was possibly a tail malfunction this time mid-flight, could it cause a debris field like the one we re seeing? well, it could if the tail if a significant part of the tail came off or they had a rapid decompression at that flight level at 30,000 feet. and you would expect to see the plane come down in two distinct debris areas, which is the debris field that they have. and so that could explain it. people are going to be very skeptical of that because this plane should have been through several checks what they call c checks and d checks where that tail should have been inspected. however, that being said those inspections don t often and don t usually include x-rays or sonograms, if you will, technical inspections like that on the tail that can see beneath the paint job. mary schiavo, phillip mudd, thank you both. appreciate your expertise. a brand new poll shows one republican rising. who s moving to the top of the field? that story next. and dozens of chipotl ....

You wrote in your piece yesterday questioning whether that could have contributed to the crash. i would consider this also, this is this is a plane that is leased to metrojet. it is owned by an irish company. even after that incident in 2001, you can assume that all repairs had been made but is it your thought there could have been some major damage left behind that may have contributed in this crash? well, i m just looking at the conjunction of two things. there is that wreckage of the tail that broke apart and the damage in that accident in 2001 was severe and it was done to the tail. of course it was inspected at regular intervals for safety reasons but i think it s sometimes impossible to detect whether there is a fracture, some kind of fracture that is hidden from those inspections. and the worst air crash in history involving a single plane involved a decompression in the 1980s on a boeing 747 in japan ....

Way the wreckage is distributed and we see that the tail section is three miles away from the nose of the plane and we have to look to see if there s any sign of an explosion. we have to be very careful of the word of explosion. one very unfamiliar and one familiar. familiar one is the bomb, where there s ignition, smoke and fame. the unfamiliar is an explosive decompression meaning with a failure of the structure of the airplane, the pressure of the air inside the cabin 31,000 feet is far higher than the pressure of the air outside and if anything breaks and allows that pressure to be released it does as much damage in fact as a bomb. and looking at the wreckage on the ground here, it struck me that the wreckage of the tail section is very clean. there s no sign of fire, smoke or the normal kind of shrapnel impact of a bomb you would expect in the case of a bomb. so i m concluding from that that ....
