Tunisian President Kais Saied has appointed a new interior minister days after seizing control of the government and freezing the parliament, pledging to protect civil rights and respect freedoms.

Tunisia’s biggest political party, Ennahda, has called for national dialogue to get the country out of the political crisis sparked by the president’s dismissals of the government and parliament.
In a reversal of previous calls to its supporters to take to the streets against President Kais Saied’s actions, Ennahda the lead party in Tunisia’s fractious ruling coalition urged dialogue and efforts to avoid civil strife. ....

WASHINGTON US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday spoke by phone with Tunisian President Kais Saied to urge respect for democracy after he sacked the government.
In his call, the top US diplomat urged Saied to “maintain open dialogue with all political actors and the Tunisian people,” the State Department said in a statement.
“He encouraged President Saied to adhere to the principles of democracy and human rights that are the basis of governance in Tunisia,” it said. ....

US says it's analyzing whether Tunisia developments constitute a coup

Washington, Jul 26 (EFE).- The United States government on Monday said it has not yet determined whether Tunisian President Kais Saied’s move to relieve the prime minister of his position and suspend Parliament constitutes a coup.
In a press conference, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden’s administration is “concerned about the developments in Tunisia.”
“A determination about a coup is a legal determination, and we would look to the State Department to conduct a legal analysis before making a determination. So there hasn’t been a conclusion on that front,” Psaki said. ....
