'UN High Commissioner's report portrayed LTTE as heroic' - Lord Naseby

Lord Naseby of Britain accuses UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet of trying to make the LTTE heroic in her report on Sri Lanka.
Based on the report, the UN Human Rights Council s hosting body in Sri Lanka, including the United Kingdom, will submit a resolution to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Lord Naseby, who is also chairman of the British Parliamentary Group on Sri Lanka, points out that the LTTE s atrocities were forgotten in the Human Rights Commissioner s report.
In a letter to the office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, Lord Naseby added that the LTTE, a brutal terrorist organization, had assassinated moderate Tamil leaders, as well as former President R. Premadasa and Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. ....

US President Joe Biden has approved an executive order to impose sanctions on the leaders of Myanmar s coup.
President Joe Biden said that his administration will impose sanctions against those involved in last week s military coup in Myanmar and demanded that the country immediately return power to that nation s democratically elected government.
The sanctions will target military leaders who directed the coup, as well as their business interests and close family members.
In brief remarks, Biden said he had approved an executive order to immediately sanction the leaders responsible for the Feb. 1 coup, with an initial round of targets to be identified this week. He also called on the military to release detained activists and political officials, including de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. ....

Tensions in Myanmar are at an all-time high, after the country s military seized power in an early morning coup on Monday, detaining democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior government members.
Suu Kyi s party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), secured a landslide victory in the country s November election, winning more than 80 per cent of the votes.
The military coup came as the country s new parliament was set to meet for the first time, with the generals justifying the power grab by alleging widespread election fraud, resulting in the army imposing a one-year state of emergency. ....
