Q: Tell us about yourself. Where were you born and where did you grow up?
A: I was born in Saudi Arabia to Ethiopian immigrant parents. We moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when Iwas nine years old.
Q. What inspired you into science in general, and specifically the nematology field of research?
A: In high school, I developed a strong passion for biology. I was especially interested in aspects like plant physiology and genetics. I obtained a BSc in Horticulture, in 2008, from Jimma University, Ethiopia. Plant pathology was a significant area of my undergraduate studies, and it was how I came across nematodes; microscopic worm-like animals that are present in every environment across the globe. I was fascinated by these tiny, yet important creatures, and I wanted to learn more about them. But there was little information on the topic. In 2010, I successfully applied for a VLIR-UOS scholarship to pursue an MSc in Nematology at Gent University, Belgium.

This document provides an overview of Human Rights Watch’s observations and questions to Tanzania in advance of the upcoming pre-sessional review of Tanzania by the UN Human Rights Committee (“the Committee”).
We hope that it will inform the Committee’s consideration of the compliance of the government of Tanzania (“the government”) with its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (“the Covenant”) and prove useful as the Committee draws up the “List of Issues” to seek further clarity from the government on outstanding issues with regard to its adherence to the Covenant.

JUST IN: Internet Outages Affecting Arlington Public Schools

A widespread East Coast internet outage may cause delays for teachers and students accessing Arlington Public Schools systems during remote learning.
“Some users may be experiencing issues with their internet, or applications such as Canvas, Google Classroom or Teams,” APS spokesman Frank Bellavia tells ARLnow.
In an email to families, the school system said that those accessing services through [email protected] may experience delays, but those delays will vary by user.
A reported fiber optic cable cut in Brooklyn is at least one factor causing internet-related problems up and down the East Coast today.
“It’s not clear if that issue is responsible for the entire outage,” the Associated Press reported. “The internet service provider didn’t have any estimate when the problem spot would be fixed.”

Ex-DIS freelancers collectively claim P1.8 million from government

The outcome of a possible class-action lawsuit that is only now taking shape could open floodgates (as well as vaults at the Bank of Botswana) as 30 former part-time employees of the Department of Information Services (DIS) claim P1.8 million in unpaid wages.
Courtesy of a mis-worded contract of service, DIS legally bound itself to pay young people enrolled in its Youth Freelancers Programme for stories and pictures “submitted” – and not “published” as is the norm internationally. However, the accounts department applied the norm and there was no complaint from the freelancers until one was alerted by a DIS employee. The latter apparently had an axe to grind with the person responsible for the contract. With the one freelancer having been paid and upon a lawyer’s intervention, the 30 ex-freelancers are also demanding that they be paid as well. The first name on the list is that of Juliah Kotlhao and in line with judicial norm, the matter becomes Juliah Kotlhao & Others. Among Others is the spokesperson of the Botswana Patriotic Front and former Big Brother Africa contestant, Justice Motlhabani, who holds a journalism degree from the University of Botswana.
