Shawn WhitsellWhat started as a small playwright development lab has emerged as a burgeoning theater production company, marked by dynamic partnerships, unique process-based programming and plans for an ambitious season of new work.
“It’s been a challenging, but really productive year,” says Molly Breen, who co-founded Tennessee Playwrights Studio with Kenley Smith in 2018 and currently serves as TPS producer and program coordinator. “Despite the pandemic, we’ve continued to do the work, developing new scripts and building new partnerships. We’re really excited about all the possibilities and opportunities, particularly as live theater resumes.”

Shawn WhitsellOn Monday, Verge Theater Company continues conVERGEnce, the virtual discussion series that has been opening up conversations about representation in theater. Past discussions centered on anti-racism and reimagining arts institutions. At 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, Verge will host New Works as a Path Forward, featuring Shawn Whitsell, Amanda Card and Kyle Hayden.
Board member Tessa Bryant says that through discussing the possibilities of producing new plays, theater companies can examine how it’s serving audiences and artists. “New works, more than any other kind of work we can be producing, have the potential to stretch our artists but also move the social needle in a way that a lot of other work does not have,” says Bryant. “New works give us a chance to put aside some works that are no longer serving us. How can we both honor classics and do work that is better serving our underrepresented artists?”
