The man who transforms grey urban spaces into green oases The last year has taught us the importance of outdoor spaces, little oases of green amid the grey expanse of the city where we can safely meet even during a pandemic. But what exactly goes into creating such a space? We caught up with someone who knows: Nigel Dunnett, professor of Planting Design, Urban Horticulture and Vegetation Technology at the University of Sheffield. His credentials speak for themselves: he installed Buckingham Palace’s Diamond Garden to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne; he was responsible for the Barbican planting after 2013; he’s a gold-winning Chelsea Flower Show entry; and he planted London’s Olympic Park, the UK’s largest urban green space and the first created for 150 years, alongside Prof James Hitchmough. ....
MUMBAI: As the city sees a rise in the number of Covid-19 cases again, the average growth rate of the diseases has increased from 0.12% on February 1 to 0.22% now. Wards which cover parts of Bandra, Chembur and Mulund have the highest growth rate, much above the overall city growth rate. H-West ward, which covers parts of Bandra, Khar and Santacruz, has a growth rate of 0.36%, followed by M-West ward, which covers Chembur and has a growth rate of 0.35%. ‘T’ ward, which covers parts of Mulund, has the third highest growth rate at 0.34%. Senior officials said that looking at the trend, municipal staff in these wards had already been instructed activate Covid care centres, send instructions to housing societies to follow Covid rules and penalise those not wearing a mask in public. ....

The BMC has pasted notices on trees that may be hacked in Chembur MUMBAI: Chembur residents are planning to hold a peaceful Chipko protest after learning that the BMC is likely to cut down over 150 trees to make way for the Metro-2B project, which will connect DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd. Even as the civic gardens department and local ward office were passing the buck on each other on where residents could submit suggestions and objections, notices have already been pasted on the trees. Chembur, which is a highly polluted area, is already deficit in green cover. We request the BMC to stay the cutting/transplantation pending consultations with us and other stakeholders, urged Hemant Petare, general secretary of the Chembur Citizens Forum. ....
