Buenos Aires, Feb 3 : Argentine football’s Professional League Cup will cease to be called the Diego Maradona Cup because of possible legal action from heirs to the deceased legend’s estate.
The tournament adopted Maradona’s name just days after the 1986 World Cup winner’s death from a heart attack in November, reports Xinhua news agency.
However, Argentine football officials decided to revert to the tournament’s original name for fear of future lawsuits for the use of Maradona’s name and image.
According to lawyer Martin Apolo, image and naming rights form one of the “most important assets” in Maradona’s inheritance.

Boca Juniors have reached the final of the first edition of the Diego Maradona Cup, after topping their group with a 2-2 draw against another of the Argentine's former clubs, Argentinos Juniors.
The 2020 Copa de la Liga Profesional, or officially named Copa Diego Armando Maradona, is a domestic cup contested by the 24 teams in Argentina's Premera Division. It was formed as a contingency competition to replace the league, as coronavirus complications delayed the congested schedule.
