Consumer Protection’s presence in the region increases ability to deal with local issues
Consumer Protection has appointed a new senior regional officer to service the region which covers Geraldton and an area as far as Carnarvon, the northern Wheatbelt around Moora and remote communities such as Wiluna to the east.
Candice Evans has previously worked at the Housing Authority (now the Department of Communities) where, amongst other roles, she was the Area Manager in Halls Creek coordinating public housing services for mostly indigenous clients. Prior to that, she was an intelligence analyst for the Department of Justice, identifying safety and security risks for Court users. ....

The 30 April online panel, moderated by Kenyan investigative journalist Catherine Gicheru, brought together celebrated journalists and experts to discuss the findings presented by ICFJ Global Director of Research Dr Julie Posetti (Australia).
The laureate of the 2021 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, Maria Ressa (CEO of Filipino news website Rappler), and the US NBC journalist Brandy Zadrozny, testified that the intense online harassment they recently went through was a response to their investigations into disinformation and populist networks.

Healthcare workers in Malawi are concerned that misinformation about COVID-19 is preventing patients in dire need of medical attention not related to the virus, from seeking what could be live-saving treatment.
When Eunice Marorongwe, a senior nurse at a rural hospital in Malawi, received a child patient with a serious leg infection, she was shocked at how her parents could keep her at home for a month, without getting treatment to save her life.
“It was at lunchtime at the end of last year when the 14-year-old girl came to the clinic with her right leg in a very bad state”, she says. ....

NUR-SULTAN, April 29, 2021 – The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected Kazakhstan’s progress in strengthening human capital, warned experts during a virtual roundtable this week organized by the World Bank and the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The discussion aimed to facilitate a holistic and equity-oriented policy dialogue for informing investments and strategic plans to boost skills and productivity in the country.
Human capital is the knowledge, skills, and health that people accumulate throughout their lives, which enable them to realize their potential as productive members of the society. From 2017, the World Bank has led on a global effort on the human capital development to accelerate more and better investments in people for greater equity and economic growth. ....

New GOTAFE Café To Boost Local Hospitality Workforce

A new $1.4 million paddock-to-plate café and restaurant funded by the Andrews Labor Government will give Shepparton students real-life training and become a destination for Victorian foodies.
Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney today officially opened Common Ground Café and Restaurant at GOTAFE Shepparton and met with local TAFE students to taste some of their culinary creations.
The state-of-the-art facility includes an operational café that is open to the public with classrooms and multi-functional spaces that support learning opportunities for barista, hospitality and cookery students.
Common Ground will help reinvigorate the Fryers Street campus with its must-eat menu of sustainable foods that also showcase the talents of students in other departments, including agriculture and baking. ....
