Flood risk to new homes in England and Wales will increase in disadvantaged areas
The building of new homes continues in flood-prone parts of England and Wales, and losses from flooding remain high. A new study, which looked at a recent decade of house building, concluded that a disproportionate number of homes built in struggling or declining neighbourhoods will end up in high flood-risk areas due to climate change.
The study, by Viktor Rözer and Swenja Surminski from the Grantham Research Institute, used property-level data for new homes and information on the socio-economic development of neighbourhoods to analyse spatial clusters of disproportional increase in the flood exposure of newly built homes and investigated how these patterns evolve in different climate change scenarios. Their findings, which discuss the issues of spending on flood defences and the role of spatial planning in adopting to climate change, are published in the IOP Publishing journa ....

Living in social housing is no longer an accurate indicator of prosperity, with new research indicating a narrowing of the gap between social renters and the private sector in terms of income, job status and social class.

The findings challenge commonly held assumptions that social housing is for those who are struggling and supports more recent findings which reveal things began to change around 20 years ago.
Analysis by the University of York showed a narrowing in the gap between social renters and the national average in income since 2000. ....

Save the Children Australia is encouraged by a report in The Australian newspaper today that Australia’s attorneys-general have been advised to raise the age of criminal responsibility to a minimum of 14 years.
Currently, the minimum age of criminal responsibility in Australia is 10 years old, which is out of line with all of the available evidence and international standards.
