Laotian cement plant workers paid back wages in long running dispute
Written by Global Cement staff
05 May 2021
Laos: Workers at the Guestown-Lao cement plant have been paid back wages in a dispute. All 170 employees owed money by the Guestown-Lao company plant in Luang Prabang province’s Nam Bak district have now received US$42,000 from the plant’s new owner, according to Radio Free Asia. Some of the former employees of the plant have also returned to work under the new management.
Provincial authorities detained the Chinese owner of the Guestown-Lao plant in April 2021, accused him of failing to pay wages to his Lao workers in November 2020 and subsequently filed criminal charges against him. He is now awaiting trial on the charges. The company has since been taken over by China-based Jian Qe.

The Philippines has taken the gloves off in its dispute with Beijing over the South China Sea, with its top diplomat dropping the F-bomb as he demanded the withdrawal of Chinese vessels near the Scarborough Shoal.
Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jnr took to Twitter, calling China an "ugly oaf" and demanding it "get the f*** out" of Philippine maritime waters. His colourful language followed reports that Chinese coastguard ships had harassed their Philippine counterparts in the vicinity of the shoal, which is claimed by both countries.

Mexico Ruling on U.S. Potatoes Pt 3
Tuesday May 4th, 2021
I’m Bob Larson. The Mexican Supreme Court ruled last week that its government does have the authority to allow the import of U.S. fresh potatoes.
Now, according to National Potato Council CEO Kam Quarles, the two governments will try and work out the details …
QUARLES … “Clearly, there’s going to be political influence at play, but, I mean, I think it’s pretty obvious that Secretary Vilsack, U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Tai, they’re really engaged in this issue. They know it very well and I think they’re going to want to get a win here because this issue is, even though it’s been kind of embroiled in a ton of politics, it’s easy to solve.”

Mexico Ruling on U.S. Potatoes Pt 2
Monday May 3rd, 2021
I’m Bob Larson. Fresh U.S. potatoes could soon be headed to Mexico. This after Mexico’s Supreme Court’s ruling last week that gives its government the authority to allow the import of U.S. spuds, following obligations under the USMCA.
National Potato Council CEO, Kam Quarles says Mexico’s grower groups have pushed hard against U.S. potatoes …
QUARLES … “Countries can’t say, we’re going to shut of trade when competition gets too inconvenient. The point is that you want to provide consumers with a choice. You want to have that healthy competition in a variety of different goods.”

Philippines Tells China to Get Its Ships 'The F*** Out' of Disputed South China Sea Waters
On 5/3/21 at 10:27 AM EDT
Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro Locsin Jr. lashed out at China on Twitter on Sunday night as tensions between the two countries continued to escalate over the South China Sea.
"China, my friend, how politely can I put it? Let me see...O...GET THE F*** OUT," Locsin tweeted, referencing that China has vessels in the disputed waters.
Locsin also wrote: "What are you doing to our friendship? You. Not us. We're trying. You. You're like an ugly oaf forcing your attentions on a handsome guy who wants to be a friend; not to father a Chinese province..."

We all have a stake - if not a say - in these wage talks

Card image cap

02 May 2021 - 00:00 By Sunday Times Editorial
This week public service & administration minister Senzo Mchunu called on South Africans to suggest proposals to resolve the deadlock in wage negotiations between the government and public service unions. Amid fiscal pressures and a moribund economy, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, talks between the government and unions representing its employees have been particularly difficult.
Even before the current round of talks, the parties were locked in a dispute over the government's reluctance to honour the last leg of a three-year wage deal. That dispute, which has been to the Labour Appeal Court, is now headed for the Constitutional Court...

Somalia criticizes ‘biased’ fact-finding commission
Magdalene Mukami   |
28.01.2021
MOGADISHU, Somalia
Djibouti said Thursday that it carried out a professional and impartial fact-finding regarding the situation between Kenya and Somalia.
“With regards to the way the mission was fulfilled, there is no doubt that it was carried out with professionalism and impartiality, while remaining strictly neutral,” Djibouti said in a statement on findings by a fact-finding team Jan. 3 - 13.
“Djibouti was only driven by the sole purpose to help the two sisterly nations ease tensions between them and has adopted an unbiased approach based on strict objectivity.”
Somalia accused Djibouti of “being biased” in its findings after the Horn of Africa country released findings that showed no evidence that Kenya was interfering in Somalia’s affairs.

Turkish President Erdogan Calls for History Commission After Biden 'Genocide' Statement
On 4/25/21 at 9:40 AM EDT
d prompting immediate rebukes from today's Turkish leaders. Biden recognized the mass killings that began in 1915 and resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million Ottoman Armenians.
He declared "we affirm the history," but noted the move was not intended to "cast blame" on modern Turkey, "but to ensure that what happened is never repeated."
Armenian leaders commended Biden's remarks, but Turkey put out statements blasting it as factually inaccurate and disputing the historical evidence of said "genocide."
"President Erdogan opened Turkey's national archives & called for a joint historical committee to investigate the events of 1915, to which Armenia never responded. It is a pity @POTUS has ignored, among others, this simple fact and taken an irresponsible and unprincipled position," tweeted Ibrahim Kalin, Erdogan's primary spokesperson, Sunday.

No-one would dispute that safety on our roads is paramount, and that the tragic loss of life on State Highway 5 suffered by Hawke's Bay communities in recent years is a burden that's too much to bear.
Safety is the number one priority in our Regional Transport Plan out for consultation at present, and the focus of the Government's Road to Zero 2020-2030 Road Safety Strategy.

Ericsson gains backing of Iancu, Tillis, Michel in FRAND dispute
13-04-2021
10-09-2015
Ericsson has secured the support of the former director of the US Trademark and Patent Office Andrei Iancu, Senator Thom Tillis and former Federal Circuit Judge Paul Michel, in its international standard-essential patents (SEP) dispute with Samsung.
The trio filed an
amicus brief on Friday, April 9, urging the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to uphold an anti-interference injunction handed down by a US federal court, and to ignore an anti-suit order delivered by a Chinese court.
In the brief, Tillis and Iancu and Michel warned that the case “represents an extreme and concerning step in the increasingly contentious battles of where and how to resolve FRAND licensing disputes” and that the issue “goes to the sovereignty of the US”.
