Chennai, May 13 : The landmark judgment of a division bench of the Madras High Court against religious intolerance has turned into a major topic of discussion among the legal and religious circles across South India.
The Madras High Court division bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and P Velmurugan on May 7 had made some observations while hearing a petition over the conduct of religious festivals. They had said that allowing religious intolerance is not good for a secular country like India. The court also observed that " resistance by one religious group if reciprocated by other groups would lead to chaos and riots in the country and that this was not acceptable."

One hopes that the pushback by the Madras High Court will continue with other courts upholding equal rights for Hindus.
Hindus are entitled to equal rights to public spaces.
The Madras High Court has, in a significant judgement on the use of public spaces and streets by religious communities, struck a strong blow to deliver equal rights for Hindus.
The judgement, delivered on 30 April 2021 by a two-judge bench comprising justices N Kirubakaran and P Velumurugan, involved a case from Kalathur village in Tamil Nadu, where the Hindu and Muslim communities were locked in tense combat over the rights of Hindus to celebrate their festivals by taking out processions on certain days.

Chennai: The Madras High Court has said allowing religious intolerance is not good for a secular country and ‘resistance’ by one religious group, if reciprocated by another, could lead to chaos and riots.
A bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and P Velmurugan made the remarks while hearing an appeal over conduct of temple processions by villagers at V Kalathur in Perambalur district in Tamil Nadu on a specified route, objected to by local Muslims.
It was ‘evident’ from the affidavit of the third respondent, Deputy Superintendent of Police, “that three days festival of the aforesaid temples were peacefully conducted till the year 2011 and only from the year 2012 onwards the Muslims started objecting to some of the Hindu festivals, terming them as Sins,” the court said in a recent order.
