CAPE TOWN – Over 700 pelicans were found dead in a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Senegal that provides refuge for millions of migratory birds, according to international media reports.
News broadcaster Al Jazeera reported on Thursday that 750 pelicans were found dead in Djoudj bird sanctuary near the border with Mauritania, a remote pocket of wetland near the border with Mauritania and a resting place for birds that cross the Sahara Desert into West Africa each year.

According to the Guardian, Bocar Thiam, the director of Senegal’s parks, said in an interview that authorities took samples for screening and they hope to find out what caused the deaths of the pelicans.

Senegal's Djoudj Bird Sanctuary is home to millions of birds from almost 400 different species
A major bird park in northern Senegal has been closed to the public after the mysterious deaths of least 750 pelicans, with initial analysis ruling out bird flu.
A patrol in the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary found "740 juvenile and 10 adult" pelicans dead on January 23, the environment ministry said.
The ministry added that it had ordered "on-the-spot autopsies" and that samples had been sent for analysis.
Meanwhile the pelican bodies and their waste have been destroyed and public access, including canoe tours through the park's waterways, has been suspended.

Senegal restricts public access to major park following deaths of 750 pelicans

The Senegalese authorities on Wednesday restricted public access to a major bird park after the mysterious death of at least 750 pelicans. Authorities have ruled out the possibility of bird flu after thorough investigations.
A patrol in the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary found "740 juvenile and 10 adults" pelicans dead on January 23, the environment ministry said.
Created in 1971, with an area of 16,000 hectares, the Djoudj National Bird Park (PNOD) has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1981. It is one of the major green tourism attractions in Senegal.
Located in the north of the country, about sixty kilometers north of Saint-Louis, in the delta of Senegal in the Sahel, the park is made up of a succession of wetlands, savannah and numerous canals, lakes, basins and swamps. The park has nearly three million birds from almost 400 species.

DAKAR (Reuters) - Some 750 pelicans have been found dead in a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Senegal that provides refuge for millions of migratory birds, the country’s parks director said.
Rangers found the pelicans on Jan. 23 in the Djoudj bird sanctuary, a remote pocket of wetland near the border with Mauritania and a resting place for birds that cross the Sahara Desert into West Africa each year.
An unverified video published on local media showed hundreds of pelican carcasses scattered on a beach, muddy and darker than their normally eye-catching white.
“We took some samples for screening and we hope in the near future to know what caused the death of the pelicans,” Bocar Thiam, director of Senegal’s parks, said in an interview.

From lockdowns to looting: how Covid-19 has taken a toll on world's threatened heritage sites

Lockdowns, stranded workers, a collapse in tourism revenue, the threat of looting: the stewards of cultural heritage sites across the globe have faced harrowing difficulties over the past year in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. All are still struggling to meet the challenges as the new year begins.
Some international organisations have drafted action plans to help managers of heritage sites cope with the repercussions of Covid-19. The International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas (Aliph), for example, has allocated $2m in emergency grants for more than 100 struggling operators in 34 countries.
