Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” has set a China release date of March 26, five days ahead of its U.S. debut in theaters and on streaming.
The past two installments of the franchise have made more money in China than in North America, and with U.S. cinemas still closed in much of the country and taking a continuous beating from the COVID-19 pandemic, the same can be expected for the latest Adam Wingard-directed title.

Its China release, which will almost assuredly be its largest theatrical outing globally, comes amid beef between Legendary, a subsidiary of China’s Wanda Group, and Warner Bros., its U.S. distributor. The former threatened legal action against the latter over its decision to release all of its 2021 films on HBO Max day-and-date with their theatrical debut. Warner Bros. had exa ....

Paramount Pictures is entering the streaming era in a big way, one that will see the 108-year old studio overhaul the way it releases and licenses the movies it makes.
As part of that effort, Paramount will substantially shrink the amount of time its films are in theaters. At the same time, the studio has adjusted its pay TV output deal with Epix in order to provide thousands of movie titles to the nascent Paramount Plus streamer.
More from Variety
In conjunction with ViacomCBS’ investor presentation today, Paramount Pictures will disclose that it is experimenting with a shorter exclusive exhibition window for theatrical releases. Instead of the traditional 90 days between theatrical release and the first home entertainment availability, Paramount will look to a 30-day frame for most titles and a 45-day theatrical window for tentpole titl ....

New York City Movie Theaters Can Finally Reopen. Will People Return?

For the first time in nearly a year, New York-based movie theater operator Nicolas Nicolaou can breathe a sigh of relief. That’s because Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that cinemas across the five boroughs could reopen starting next month, a potential reprieve for a sector of the entertainment industry that’s been walloped by the coronavirus pandemic.
Nicolaou owns three theaters in the city Cinema Village in Manhattan, Alpine Theatre in Brooklyn and Cinemart Cinemas in Queens. Due to damage from frozen pipes, he doesn’t expect those venues to reopen until April 2. When he can reignite the marquee lights, his locations will be running at 25% capacity, or 50 people per auditorium which means it will be nearly impossible to make money. Still, he says he’s grateful for the opportunity to welcome patrons after what he refers to as “the worst ....
