The National Electoral Council said Monday that the 470 candidates proposed for the National Assembly were validated as congressmen during the elections held on Sunday, including Elian Gonzalez Brotons, a Cuban kid that arrived to South Florida in 1999 and was the center of a diplomatic crisis between Cuba and the United States over an international custody case between the father of the minor in Cuba and the child's family in Miami.
Elián González, the Cuban boy found clinging to an inner tube near Florida shores who became the center of an international child custody dispute as well as a political battle between Cuba’s late leader Fidel Castro and Cuban exiles in Miami, is set to become a member of the island’s National Assembly after Cubans go to the polls today.
