Jamaica: Re “The real holiday” (editorial, May 21): You state that Brooklyn-Queens Day is a “nonsense holiday that nobody understands or cares about.” We are writing to let you know that there are those of us who care deeply about this holiday and what it celebrates.

Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.: On Dec. 30, Gov. Hochul cut 14% of mental health practitioners from a bill that requires all insurance companies to cover therapy. This will drastically impact New Yorkers’ access to affordable mental health care from qualified providers at a time when waitlists are already very long and many are struggling to afford therapy for themselves and their children.

Manhattan: Last week, NYC Department of Correction Commissioner Louis Molina told City Council members that “if nothing changes,” the NYC jail population could increase to more than 7,000 people by 2024. This would surely mean more tragic deaths in DOC custody and worse conditions for officers, who can’t seem to safely manage the number of people in jail already. Those outcomes are unacceptable, and Mayor Adams needs to act now to change course.
