Hennessy's celebrate 100 years in business


This year Hennessy's of Blessington celebrate 100 years of business in Blessington.
The business was established in 1921 by Arthur P. Hennessy and his wife Kathleen in the building formerly known as the Downshire Arms Hotel. They established a wine, spirit, grocery and hardware business, albeit under very difficult circumstances due to the ongoing civil unrest in Ireland at the time.
They had 2 children - a son, Thomas (Toddy) and Elizabeth (Beth). They endured the hardships of the 1930's trying to provide goods and materials to customers around the area which was mostly agricultural at that time. In the 1940's came World War II and the introduction of rationing and scarcity of goods and jobs.
