Brace for steep price hikes, consumers warned

Brace for steep price hikes, consumers warned
Local businessman Leonet Anderson

The COVID-19 pandemic is driving up the cost of manufacturing and shipping, and consumers should brace themselves for increased prices.
“This is critical going forward. When everything is rising for consumers how are they going to afford it,” is the question being posed by local businessman Leonet Anderson, owner of General Hardware Supplies in Arnos Vale.
Anderson told SEARCHLIGHT on Thursday that since the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year, there has been what he considers a “tremendous” increase in prices of many goods on the world market, but he can speak specifically about prices related to hardware products like lumber, steel, plywood and light hardware.

Councillor urges rethink for subdivisions on quake-prone land

Houses could be built in Blenheim's quake-prone east with innovative engineering, says a councillor concerned that its subdivision potential is not being catered for.

The eastern edge of Blenheim has been ruled out for urban expansion since the Christchurch earthquakes caused liquefaction that wrecked homes, streets and backyards a decade ago.
The issue resurfaced as the Marlborough District Council plans major pipelines along Redwood St and Alabama Rd, through the eastern area., to prevent new sections from flooding drains.
The council estimated the works would cost $17.4 million and take up to five years to complete. The first round of upgrades - burying an 80-metre-long culvert - has been completed.

A developer has appealed against the decision by councillors to refuse planning permission for a drive-thru Starbucks and Burger King near Dundee Airport.
Early last year, London-based firm GVD submitted a planning application on behalf of Eat & Drive Ltd to build the two facilities and 54 parking spaces, including e-parking, at the bottom of Riverside Avenue.
